电影故事：

查理·考夫曼是洛杉矶一名小有成就的电影编剧。他对女记者苏珊·奥林的纪实文学《兰花盗》产生了浓厚兴趣，正着手将其改编成电影剧本。但考夫曼的改编之路并不平坦，灵感从头脑中溜得无影无踪。奇怪的是，和查理同住的双胞胎兄弟唐纳德，此时突然对剧本创作产生了不可思议的想法和热情……在另一个空间里，女记者苏珊·奥林与兰花盗拉罗奇不断接触，坠入爱河。查理的改编获得成功，并且对奥林产生了感情，但一向木讷的他却没有勇气向奥林吐露自己的想法。唐纳德一心要促成查理的好事，但他的主意却把查理的生活引向了更加荒谬和混乱的结局……

本片依然延续了斯派克·乔曾上一部作品（《成为约翰·马尔科维奇》）的叙事风格和主题风格。与其说乔曾在不断表达着对于自己职业（电影编导）的体认，不如说他在努力寻找一种解脱自我的方式。男女主人公查理和奥林都在虚构中，逐渐开启了另一自我的大门。在虚构的（想象的）世界与真实的世界之间，在现在与过去之间，乔曾没有给出任何婉转的连缀，而是简单直接地，按照情绪逻辑把它们并置在一起，就像尼古拉斯·凯奇一人分饰双胞胎兄弟俩那样，让观众分不清哪些是真实哪些是虚构。这既是影片的形式风格，也是导演想要达到的意涵效果。
