In the year of our Lord…
Judea, for nearly a century, had lain under the mastery of Rome.
In the seventh year of the reign of Augustus Caesar…
an imperial decree ordered every Judean…
each to return to his place of birth…
to be counted and taxed.
Converging ways of many of them led to their capital city, Jerusalem…
the troubled heart of their land.
The old city was dominated by the fortress of Antonia…
the seat of Roman power…
and by the great golden temple…
the outward sign of an inward and imperishable faith.
Even while they obeyed the will of Caesar…
the people clung proudly to their ancient heritage…
always remembering the promise of their prophets…
that one day there would be born among them a redeemer…
to bring them salvation and perfect freedom.
And the woman?
My wife.
Move on. You’ll be counted at Bethlehem.
Come on, come on.
What village is this?
Nazareth.
We should arrive in Jerusalem tomorrow night.
You’re not watching the soldiers, Joseph?
We’ve seen Romans before.
没错…
Yes…
and we will see them again.
My table is not finished.
Where is your son?
He’s walking in the hills.
He neglects his work, Joseph.
不是
No.
Once, I reproached him with forgetting his work. He said to me:
” I must be about my father’s business.”
Then why isn’t he here, working?
He’s working.
Trumpeters of the legion!
Welcome, Messala.
The command is yours.
Thank you.
Thank you for relieving me.
Drusus…
when I was a boy, I dreamed of commanding this garrison.
Now the wheel has turned.
I am in command.
立正
Attention!
Aisle one, face right!
向前
Forward!
I’d forgotten the heat.
太热了
If it were only the heat.
I lived here until I was 14. Jerusalem was my home.
-My father was head of… -Yes, I know.
Your father is well-remembered. Fine governor.
If there can be such a thing in this forsaken land.
If you want to rise, Sextus, do the difficult.
I asked to be sent here.
You’ll find the people changed since you were a boy.
In what way?
Oh, won’t pay their taxes, an irrational resentment of Rome….
There’s nothing new in all that.
And then there’s religion. I tell you, they’re drunk with religion.
They smash the statues of our gods, even those of the emperor.
Punish them.
试过了
We do.
When we can find them.
Find the leaders.
You don’t know. There’s nothing you can put your finger on.
There are strange forces at work here.
This “messiah” business…
I know. There was one predicted when I was a boy.
A king of the Jews, who will lead them into some sort of anti-Roman paradise.
Makes your head spin.
There’s a wild man in the desert named John…
who drowns people in water.
And a carpenter’s son who does magic tricks. “Miracles” they call them.
There’s always a rabble-rouser stirring up trouble.
No, no, no. This man is different.
He teaches that God is near, in every man.
It’s actually quite profound, some of it.
You’ve been too long away from Rome.
Go back, Sextus.
Go to Capri. Bathe, rest, lie by the sea…
and forget that God is in every man.
-There is divinity in only one man. -Yes, I know.
The emperor is displeased.
He wishes Judea made into a more obedient and disciplined province.
He’s ordered me to restore order. I shall carry out his wishes.
How? You can break a man’s skull, arrest him, throw him into a dungeon.
But how do you control this? How do you fight an idea?
Especially a new idea.
There’s a Jew outside. He wants to see the tribune Messala.
I assume he has a name.
He says he’s a prince, Judah Ben-Hur.
Then treat him like one!
Tell him I will join him.
Yes, tribune.
Centurion!
This was his country before it was ours.
Don’t forget that.
Yes, tribune.
Very wise. This Ben-Hur is the richest man in Jerusalem.
And the head of one of the greatest families in Judea.
We were friends as boys.
We were like brothers.
Sextus…
you ask how to fight an idea.
Well, I’ll tell you how.
With another idea.
I said I’d come back.
I never thought you would.
l’m so glad.
-Look at you. -Look at you!
You’ve come back a tribune.
When I heard that news, I drank a toast to you.
We’ll drink another now.
-Your sister and mother? -They’re fine.
They’ve talked of you ever since we knew you were coming.
-Is Tirzah married? -No.
Suitors come and go, but she dreams.
She’s been in love with you since she was 5.

Spread the good word in as many small- time segments as we can.
Let the opposition have their high ratings
Each piece wrapped in gold paper. She’ll like that.
She’ll think she’s eating money.
Just say to her:
– You sent that one last time. – I did?
那就说
Well, put:
“Something for your sweet tooth, baby,
I know.
– She doesn’t do that. – Sure she does. Like a bloodhound.
Thank you, sir.
Wait, what’s that supposed to be?
The car’s waiting outside. You will walk between us saying nothing.
– What are you talking about? – Let’s go.
Let’s go where? Who…? Who are you?
Mere errand boys carrying concealed weapons.
So, please, no errors of judgment, I beg of you.
What is this, a joke or something?
– Yes, a joke. We will laugh in the car. – Come.
But this is ridiculous.
Don’t tell me where we’re going, surprise me.
You know, I left some friends back there in the Oak Bar.
They’re going to think I’m awfully rude.
I mean, uh, couldn’t we stop off at a drugstore for a moment…
…so that I could explain I’m being, uh, kidnapped?
Well, that is what’s happening, isn’t it?
Locked.
– Tell him I’m here. – The dinner guests are expected.
Never mind that. Say to him: “Kaplan.”
By the way, what are we having for dessert?
– Is anyone in the library? – No.
这边请
This way.
You will wait here.
Well, don’t hurry. I’ll catch up on my reading.
Good evening.
Not what I expected. A little taller.
A little more polished than the others.
Oh, I’m so glad you’re pleased, Mr. Townsend.
But I’m afraid just as obvious.
What the devil is all this about? Why was I brought here?
Games? Must we?
Not that I mind a case of abduction…
…but I have tickets for the theater this evening.
To a show I was looking forward to.
And I get unreasonable about things like that.
With such expert play- acting, you make this very room a theater.
Oh, Leonard, have you met our distinguished guest?
He’s a well- tailored one, isn’t he?
My secretary is a great admirer of your methods, Mr. Kaplan.

The gleam in your eyes is so familiar a gleam
The way you did once upon a dream
In a faraway land long ago…
Lived a king and his fair queen.
Many years had they longed for a child…
and finally their wish was granted.
A daughter was born, and they called her Aurora.
Yes, they named her after the dawn…
for she filled their lives with sunshine.
Then a great holiday was proclaimed throughout the kingdom…
so that all of high or low estate…
might pay homage to the infant princess.
And our story begins on that most joyful day.
*On that joyful day
On thatjoyful day
Joyfully now to ourprincess we come
Bringing gifts and all good wishes too
We pledge our loyalty anew
Hail to the Princess Aurora
All ofher subjects adore her
did all the kingdom celebrate the long-awaited royal birth.
King Hubert and Prince Phillip!
Fondly had these monarchs dreamed one day…
and Mistress Merryweather!
-Oh! -Oh! -The little darling.
Well, quite a glittering assemblage, King Stefan.
Royalty, nobility…
the gentry, and…
How quaint. Even the rabble.
I really felt quite distressed at not receiving an invitation.
-You weren’t wanted. -Not wa…
Oh, dear, what an awkward situation.
I had hoped it was merely due to some oversight.
Well, in that event, I’d best be on my way.
And you’re not offended, Your Excellency?
Why, no, Your Majesty.
And to show I bear no ill will…
I, too, shall bestow a gift on the child.
Listen well, all ofyou.
The princess shall indeed grow in grace and beauty…
beloved by all who know her.
但是…
But…
before the sun sets on her sixteenth birthday…
she shall prick her finger on the spindle of a spinning wheel…
and die.
Oh, no!
Seize that creature!
Stand back, you fools!
Don’t despair, Your Majesties.
Merryweather still has her gift to give.
Then she can undo this fearful curse?
Oh, no, Sire.
Maleficent’s powers are far too great.
But she can help.
-But…-Just do your best, dear.
Yes, go on.
Sweet princess…
if through this wicked witch’s trick…
a spindle should your finger prick…
a ray of hope there still may be in this…
the gift I give to thee.
Not in death, but just in sleep the fateful prophecy you’ll keep.
And from this slumber you shall wake…
when true love’s kiss the spell shall break.
Fortrue love
Conquers all
But King Stefan, still fearful of his daughter’s life…
did then and there decree that every spinning wheel in the kingdom…
should on that very day be burned.
So ’twas done.
Oh, silly fiddle-faddle!
Now, come have a nice cup of tea, dear.
I’m sure it’ll work out somehow.
Well, a bonfire won’t stop Maleficent.
Of course not. But what will?
-Well, perhaps ifwe reason with her. -Reason?
-With Maleficent? -Well, she can’t be all bad.
Oh, yes, she can!
Ooh, I’d like to turn her into a fat, old hoptoad.

Hi, Toybull.
Hey, your pal just drove into town, Mr. McCarthy.
I’ll have one more, Toybull.
I’m afraid I’ll have to pay my bar bill tomorrow.
You’re good with me, Mr. McCarthy.
Thank you, Toybull.
Good night, Toybull.
Good night, Mr. McCarthy.
Operator.
Operator, I want…
489 Thunder Bay.
I want to speak to Mrs. Manion.
M-A-N-I-O-N.
This is Paul Biegler speaking.
Iron City 700.
Do they know when she’ll be there?
No, they don’t.
I see. Just leave a message.
Tell her to call this number.
Thank you.
What do you say there, counselor?
Save your money.
What’s in the brown paper bag?
It might be a cabbage head.
Bet it wouldn’t be.
You’re a very suspicious man.
True, I’m everlastingly suspicious of…
and/or fascinated by…
the contents of brown paper bags.
Shall I sneak a peek?
You do that, counselor.
You do that.
After you sneak a peek, why, you…
uncork whatever you find.
-Shall I pour? -Be a privilege.
My pleasure, sir.
You fought this soldier by yourself.
You’ve been drinking alone, Paulie.
I don’t like that.
Drop the stone, counselor.
You live in a glass house.
My windows have been busted long ago,
so I can say as I please.
No, thanks.
Those stinkweeds are
another sign of your decadence.
Paulie, it’s a fact.
Since Mitch Lodwick beat you out of
the office of public prosecutor…
you haven’t been worth salt for peanuts.
Not that I don’t understand how you feel.
A man gets beat out of
an office he’s held for a long time…
he feels his community has deserted him.
The finger of scorn is pointed at him.
None but the lonely hearts shall know my anguish.
Paulie, you’re a good lawyer.
You ought to make like one.
Be here ready for clients,
not out fishing and playing that…
rooty-tooty jazz.
Oh, I’m making a living.
I run a few abstracts…
how to divorce Jane Doe from John Doe every once in a while.
Threaten a few deadbeats.
And in the evening, I sit around and drink bourbon whisky…
and read law with Parnell Emmitt McCarthy…
one of the world’s great men.
That was a kind word, Paulie.
You know…
I might have been.
That’s one of the reasons I hate to
see your talent pushed aside by lesser men.
I look at you, and I see myself years ago…
with the same love for the smell of
the old brown books…
and the dusty office.
Here’s the rose.
A lily. A sweet lupine.
The United States Supreme Court reports.
那么…
Well…
what shall we read this evening, counselor?
How about a little Chief Justice Holmes?
Keep Chief Justice on hold for a moment. I might have a client.
Waiting for a call. Hello?
Mr. Biegler?
This is Paul Biegler speaking.
It’s your party.
-Hello? Mrs. Manion? -What?
Mr. Biegler?
I’m sorry I missed you a while ago. Did you get my message?
Who is that? What is that name?
Just a minute, please.
We seem to have a bad connection. Hold on.
It’s a woman, name of Manion. Maida took a message from her.
-In Thunder Bay? -Uh-huh.
If she wants you to represent her husband, say yes.
I don’t know what it’s all about.
Pretend you do and say yes.
-Hello? -Mr. Biegler?
Oh, yes. This is much better now.
Yes, I can hear you fine.
I’ve waited for your call all afternoon.
Yes, well, I just got in a few moments ago,
You’ve read about my husband?
Muffy, please.
是的
Yes.
Mr. Biegler, have you read
about my husband? Muffy, please,
Well, uh, yes, I have, a little.
Will you defend him?
I don’t know.
I’d have to know more about it.
Will you talk to him?
Mr. Biegler, he’s in the county jail.
Will you see him in the morning?
He’s very anxious to see you.
You’ve been so highly recommended.
I have?
Yes, someone told him about you,
Will you see him?
I suppose I could. I’ll see him tomorrow morning.
-Would you want me there too? -I think that’d be fine.
Let’s make it about 10:00.
Thank you, Thank you so much.
Yes, you’re quite welcome. Bye.
Now, what’s this all about?

she has made the sacrifice of her life to God.
Well, are we off?
Whenever you’re ready, Father. Let’s not wait for that.
Your hat’s on crooked.
I tried to put it on without a mirror to get used to….
There.
好了
Marie didn’t want to say goodbye. And I’d rather not see Louise.
She’ll be so upset and….
There’s no chance.
I’ll wait outside.
Now, Louise,
I left some things upstairs for you and Marie.
Divide the dresses, but you keep the blue ones
because blue is your color.
Take good care of Father.
And don’t let him do too many operations in one day.
Why do you have to go, anyway?Pierre.
Come along, Gaby, I ordered the table for 1 :00.
I wish you all as happy as I am.
Gaby, I can see you poor, I can see you chaste.
But I cannot see you, a strong-willed girl,
obedient to those bells.
In the Congo, Father, they’ll be calling me to work I love.
You may never get to the Congo.
You certainly can never ask for it.You know that, don’t you?
Your personal wishes cease to exist when you enter that door.
Maybe it would be easier if I went in alone, Father.
You’re not an orphan.
Or going without your father’s consent.
Please remember this, Gaby.
Remember, if you ever decide this is not right for you…
there is no sense of failure in coming back home.
Sister William.
Dr. Van der Mal? Yes?
My name’s Pascin.
You operated on me five years ago.
Oh, yes. Left lung, wasn’t it? No, the right.
May I present my daughter, Simone?
And my daughter, Gabrielle.
A great day.
Dr. Van der Mal? Sister.
I am Sister Margarita, Mistress of Postulants.
Welcome.
Of course you know Sister William from the hospital.
Sister William and I have shared many an anxious hour.
Sister William says Gabrielle will be a truly great nurse.
I know you are largely responsible for that.
I’ll miss her in my laboratory.
We’ll put her to good use in ours.
Real spirit, I think.
Well, we call it stubbornness. You may, too, after a few weeks.
We’ll be going in shortly.
Good afternoon, Doctor. Good afternoon, Sister.
I suppose Sister Margarita is what they call a living rule.
What’s that?
They say if the holy rule of a convent were destroyed…
it could be recaptured by studying the behavior of such a perfect nun.
Doctor. Sister.
修女
The dowry, I think, Father.
Oh, yes, of course.
Thank you, Doctor.
Goodbye, Father. I’ll miss you.
I’ll do my best.
I want you to be proud of me.
I don’t want to be proud of you.
I want you to be happy.
I am happy.
Gabrielle, your number is 1,072.
Thank you, Sister. You are blessed to have this number.
It belonged to Sister Marie Polycarpe.
She was a nursing sister in the Congo.
When you have your things, you will form two columns
and face the door.
From now on, your place in line…
is determined by your age in this community.
The first admitted is the oldest.
That is Yvonne Duval.Here.
Yvonne Duval.
Henrietta de la Croix.
Simone Pascin.
Cecile de Planer.
Gabrielle Van der Mal.
Helen de Rode.
Your hands must learn to stay still.
And out of sight.
Except when they’re needed for nursing or prayer.
I’m so glad you’re here, Sister William.
When you go through that door, I’m not here.
For the six months that you’re a postulant…
and the year as a novice…
we may not speak to each other except in matters of work.
I didn’t know.
Do not fret about your veils.
You will soon learn to dress without mirrors.
As you will learn tomorrow when we start studying the Holy Rule…
which governs our life here in the community…
one of the first conditions is the rule of silence.
Exterior and interior silence.
We observe the Grand Silence from after chapel at night…
until after chapel in the morning.
We will go now into chapel for evening prayers.
Hail Mary, you are full of holy favors! The Lord is with you.
You are blessed among women, and your father and son Jesus is blessed together.
Virgin Mary of God, please now and when we are dying,
Pray to God for us sinners. Amen.
(Inner silence)
Dear children, you will have five days of instruction and preparation…
before you are formally admitted as postulants by the Superior General.
We constantly strive toward perfection by inner silence.
The ultimate goal of this silence…
is to make possible constant conversation with God.
Therefore, we do not talk loudly…
nor do we engage in useless conversations.
We close doors quietly.
Whenever possible, we use a kind of sign language.
This means, “May I have permission to speak?”
This means, “Excuse me.”
Shall we try it?
We do this to attract a sister’s attention.
Just the sleeve.
We never touch another sister, of course.
We use signs, particularly during meals.
We, of course, never ask for things for ourselves.
Each sister is alert to the needs of her fellow sisters.
In walking, dear children, we never saunter…
as though we had no place to go.

“The ninth of July, 1942.”
1942. Is it possible, Miep?
Only three years ago.
“Dear Diary, since you and I are going to be great friends…
“I will start by telling you all about myself.
“My name is Anne Frank.
13岁
“I am 1 3 years old.
“I was born in Germany…
“but since my family is Jewish…
“we emigrated to Holland when Hitler came to power.
Things went well for us…
“until the war came, and the German occupation.
“Then things got very bad for the Jews.
You could not do this, and you could not do that.
We had to wear yellow stars.
I had to turn in my bike.
I couldn’t go to a Dutch school anymore.
I couldn’t go to the movies or ride in an automobile…
or even on a streetcar…
and a million other things.
but somehow we children still managed to have fun.
This morning father woke me at 5:00…
and told me to hurry and get dressed.
We were going into hiding.
I was to put on as many clothes as I could.
It would look too suspicious if we walked along carrying suitcases.
We were going to disappear…
vanish into thin air.
I’m living a great adventure.
Three other people were coming in with us.
father knew them, but we had never met them.
Something’s happened.
They have three miles to walk.
– Mother… – They’ve been arrested. I know.
– Will you stop that? – Mother! father!
We’re here.
See?
– Mr. Van Daan. – Hello, hello.
– Mrs. Van Daan. Peter. – Mr. Frank.
There were too many of the Green Police on the streets.
We had to take the long way around.
Did you introduce yourself? My daughter Anne. My wife Edith.
– Margot. Mr. and Mrs. Van Daan. – Hello.
Oh, and this is our son Peter.
So, now, please, let us take off some of these clothes.
早上好
Good morning.
– Hello, Mr. Kraler. – Good morning, Mr. Kraler.
Mr. Frank. Ah, you’re all here. That is good.
We had hoped to have everything in order.
Please, Mr. Kraler, don’t even think of it.
After all, we’ll have plenty of leisure to arrange everything ourselves.
– I brought sandwiches for your lunch. – Thank you, Miep.
The canned goods are here, and your stores of dried beans and potatoes.
– I’ll get ration books this afternoon. – Ration books?
If they see our names on ration books, they’ll know we’re here.
Don’t worry. It won’t be your names that’ll be on them.
father! The Westertoren!
Anne, no!
You must never touch a curtain. Never.
No one must ever touch a curtain, day or night.
If someone on the street should look up, or someone in those houses should see…
we would be lost.
Please remember, it’s not only our lives that are at stake…
but also Miep’s and Mr. Kraler’s.
– You have but 1 3 minutes to get settled. – Thank you.
Miep or I will be up each day to bring you food and news. Miep, we must go.
再见
Good-bye for now.
How can we thank you?
I never thought I’d live to see the day…
when a man like Mr. Frank would have to go into hiding.
When you think of the…
– Good-bye. – Thank you, Mr. Kraler.
– Good-bye, Miep. – Good-bye.
-再见
Good-bye.
– Anne! – It’s all right. I have on three more.
Excuse me, Mr. Frank.
What did he mean, just 13 minutes?
Before the workmen come.
Now, while the men are in the building below…
we must have complete quiet.
Every sound can be heard down there…
not only in the offices but in the workrooms too.
The men come at about 8:30, they leave at about 5:30…
so to be perfectly safe, from 8:00 in the morning until 6:00 in the evening…
we must move about up here only when it is absolutely necessary…
and then in stocking feet.
We must not speak above a whisper. We must not run any water.
We cannot use the sink or even– forgive me– the W.C.
The pipes go down through the workrooms.
– No trash must ever be
No trash must ever be thrown out which might reveal someone is living up here.
Not even a potato peeling.
We must burn everything in this stove at night.
This is the way that we must live until it is over, if we are to survive.
Until it is over.
After 6:00 we can move about.
We can talk and laugh, have our supper, read, play games…
just as we would at home.
Now it would be wise if we all went to our rooms and were settled before 8:00.

Brad. Brad, darling.
I love you.
I know.
I just had to call you.
I’ll never forget last night.
Especially when you sang me your new song.
Our song, Eileen. I wrote it for you.
Oh, Brad.
Would you sing it to me again?
Oh, now?
Please.
好吧
All right.
You are my inspiration, Eileen
A perfect combination, Eileen
Your eyes, your hair, are beyond compare
So is it any wonder?
You captured me and now I’m under your spell
You captured me and now I’m under your spell
Eileen
I do hate to interrupt, but would you mind hanging up, please?
Who’s that?
The other half of my party line.
Just ignore her, she’ll go away.
You have been on this phone for half an hour.
I’ve got an important call to make…
I happen to consider this an important call.
What, singing to a girl at 9:00 in the morning?
It’s none of your business what he does to me, or when.
Would you please get off this line?
I know it is early, chérie.
But I just had to talk to you.
Will I see you tonight?
Oh, I’m sorry, Yvette. I have to work.
Oh.
I have six songs to write for the new show.
But you’ll have to go out and eat dinner, no?
Oh, I’ll throw something together here.
Oh, no, darling, you mustn’t.
You must keep up your strength.
I’ll come over and cook something for you, yes?
Well, if you like.
Thank you, darling.
It’s nothing.
Brad?
Mmm-hmm?
Sing me a little of our song.
Yvette.
请吧
Please.
Would you please get off this phone?
Who is that woman?
Some little eavesdropper on my party line.
She’s always listening in.
It’s how she brightens up her drab, empty life.
If I could get a call through once in a while, my life wouldn’t be so drab.
Must you zoom up so fast?
What are you, jet-propelled or something?
Morning, Alm.
The laundryman’s coming by today.
And would you please tidy up the cupboards for me?
Oh, would you call the office and tell them I’ll be a little bit late?
That’s a peach of a hangover she’s got this morning.
I’m afraid so.
Why does she have to go out and get stoned every night?
Oh, I don’t know, Harry. Maybe she’s got a party line.
I hope you understand, madam,
that your phone company wants everyone to have a private phone.
We’re putting in new trunk lines as fast as we can.
But with all the construction going on, it takes time.
We have hundreds of applications,
which take precedence over yours.
But there must be some way to get one.
Well, if some emergency arose.
If you were to become pregnant, for example,
Mr. Conrad, being single, I’m not quite ready for that kind of emergency.
Well, I wouldn’t know what else to suggest.
Oh, but I’m at my wit’s end, really.
You see, I’m an interior decorator
and so naturally there are business calls that I must make
and I cannot get a call through.
That man is always on the phone with some woman.
Have you any idea what it’s like
to be on a party line with a sex maniac?
That’s a very serious charge, madam.
Can you substantiate it?
Well, he sings love songs at 9:00 in the morning.
Has he used objectionable language on the phone?
No.
Or threats of any nature?
No.
Has he made immoral overtures to you?
Well. Oh, not to me.
And you’re bothered by this?
Yes.
I mean, no. What do you mean, bothered?
His carrying on with all these other women disturbs you.
Mr. Conrad, please believe me, I don’t care what he does,
I just want him to stop doing it on my phone.
Well, madam, we’ll have one of our inspectors stop by
and have a talk with him.
Oh, thank you very much. I’d appreciate that.
If what you say about this man is true,
we may be forced to disconnect him.
Good.
Haven’t you reached Jan yet?
Keep trying.
If she doesn’t get here soon,
that woman is going to drive me out of my mind.
Ming dynasty in a rumpus room.
Mrs. Walters, be careful. This is priceless.
Really? What is it?
Crematory urn?
Is anybody in it?
Not at the moment.
That’s good.
Then we can drill a hole in the bottom without anyone running out.
A hole?
So we can wire it for a lamp.
Mrs. Walters, we do not wire 14th-century crematory urns.
I suppose not.
珍！
No, it’s his.
Jonathan. Jonathan, you’re very sweet and very generous,
Why not? But… Well, it’s too…
It’s too personal.
This? Yes.
If I gave you perfume, if I gave you lingerie, that would be personal.
If I gave you perfume, if I gave you lingerie, that would be personal.
But a car?
Come on, Mac. If it’s yours, move it.
Here. Send me the perfume.
Will you be stopping by my office tomorrow?
In the afternoon.
