Somebody’s coming, Pa.
知道了
Well…Let him come.
Hope you don’t mind my cutting through your place.
-No, I guess not. -I’m heading north.
Didn’t expect to find any fences around here.
Hello, boy.
You were watching me, weren’t you?
是的
Yes, I was.
I like a man who watches things going around.
It means he’ll make his mark some day.
Long time since I’ve seen a Jersey cow.
You’ll see a lot more. Jerseys and Holsteins…
and the like.
-Can I offer you some water? -Thanks.
You’re a little touchy.
Joey!
You know not to point guns at people.
I wasn’t pointing at anybody, Mother.
Sure had me snorting, son.
I just wanted you to see my rifle.
Bet you can shoot.
-Can’t you? -Little bit.
Looks like your friends are a little late.
What are the Ryker boys up to this time?
-Rykers? -That’s what I said.
I wouldn’t know a Ryker from your Jersey cow.
Don’t forget to close the gate on your way out.
Would you put down that gun? Then I’ll leave.
What’s the difference? You’re leaving anyway.
I’d like it to be my idea.
Howdy, Starrett.
Expecting trouble?
I don’t want no trouble, Starrett. I came to inform you.
I got that reservation beef contract.
-So many to tell me that? -I mean business.
Then, tend to your own.
That’s just what I’m doing.
I’m gonna need all my range.
Now you’ve warned me, get off my place.
你的家
Your place?
You’ll have to get out before the snow.
-Supposing I don’t? -You and the other squatters.
Homesteaders, you mean.
I could blast you out of here right now.
听我说
Listen to me.
The time for gun-blasting a man off his place is passed.
-They’re building a penitentiary…-Joe, that’s enough.
Who are you, stranger?
I’m a friend of Starrett’s.
Well, Starrett, you can’t say I didn’t warn you.
All right, you’ve told me. Now get off my claim.
Supper will be ready in a little while, Joe. Won’t be very long.
Wait, mister, I…
I swear, I…Wait a minute, please.
I take that back, what I…
Look, this…this thing aingt even loaded.
Not loaded?
No, Joey’s too young to go loaded.
That’s his gun.
If this don’t beat all!
My name is Starrett, Joe Starrett, and this here’s Joey.
You heard what my little woman said.
Come on in, I feel like eating.
You can call me Shane.
Guess I spook kinda easy these days.
Hello, Joe.
My place aingt very much yet, but my wife sure can cook!
It won’t be long till supper. You can wash up right here.
In case you wanted to know, that’s Ryker’s spread all over there.
He thinks the whole world belongs to him.
The old-timers can’t see it yet,
but running cattle on an open range can’t go on.
It takes too much space for too little results.
Those herds aren’t any good, they’re all horns and bone.
Cattle that is bred for meat and
fenced in and fed right, that’s the thing.
You gotta pick your spot, get your land, your own land.
A homesteader can’t run but a few beef, but he can grow grain,
and then with his garden and hogs and milk, he’ll be all right.
We make out, don’t we, Marian?
当然了
Of course.
It’s that calf again. Joey, chase her out of there.
Joey! Run on, son.
Don’t forget to shut that gate.
Joey!
走 走
Come on, shoo!
I wouldn’t ask you where you’re bound.
One place or another. Some place I’ve never been.
The only way I’ll leave is in a pine box.
What do you mean, Pa?
I mean they’ll have to shoot me and carry me out.
-You shouldn’t talk like that. -It’s the truth.
You love this place. We’ve got our roots down.
I wish you wouldn’t talk that way.
Our first real home.
What did you mean when you said…
Joey, be quiet. The men want to talk.
There’s just more work here than I can do.
If I could hire me a man that…
I had one once,
but the Rykers roughed him up,
so he lit out, cussing me…
They knocked his teeth out.
Ready for pie?
If nobody else is gonna eat this biscuit, I guess I’ll have to.
We’re kind of fancy, aren’t we?
What is, Pa?
Good plates, an extra fork…
What about me, Ma?
-What’s the matter, Marian? -Nothing.
That was an elegant dinner, Mrs. Starrett.
Excuse me.
Where’s Mr. Shane going? He didn’t even say goodbye.
He’s not going, Joey. He wouldn’t go without taking that.
I’m going outside with him.
Did you ask him to stay the night?
I’ll do that right now.
Well, I’ll be doggone. Come here a minute.
Joe, why don’t you hitch up the team?
Marian, I’ve been fighting this stump off and on for two years.
Use the team now,
this stump could say it beat us.
Sometimes nothing will do but your own sweat and muscle.
来
All right.
I wish they’d give me some bullets for this gun.
-Good morning, Joey. -How did you know it was me?
Well, I figured the cow couldn’t work that latch.
Why are you up so early?
You’re to stay for breakfast.
Oh…Well, thank you.

Hey Maggie Hello
Hiya Prew.
What are you doing over here?
Transferred over from Fort Shafter.
– You quit the Bugle Corps? – Yep.
– For here? – I didn’t pick it.
Oh you made a very bad mistake.
This outfit they can give back to General Custer.
是吗
Yeah?
Captain ain’t in yet.
I’ll look around.
What do you think you’re doing’?
– What’s your name? – Prewitt. Transfer from Fort Shafter.
I heard about you.
I heard about you too Sergeant.
This here’s a rifle outfit Prewitt.
You ain’t supposed to enjoy yourself before sundown.
Put up your cue and come along.
Grand went to the hospital yesterday. Did you put him in the sick book?
– Did you make out the morning report? – I didn’t have time Sergeant.
You’re the company clerk Mazzioli.
Those medics didn’t bring back the sick book till late yesterday.
– I’ll tend to it right now. – Thanks. I already done it for you.
You’re the best bugler they got over at Shafter.
You’re the best bugler they got on this whole island.
That’s true.
I feel for you pal.
But from my position I can’t quite reach you.
立正
Ten-hut
– At ease. – Morning sir.
Morning men. Anything special for me this morning Sergeant Warden?
– I’ve only a few minutes. – Yes sir. New man here.
Oh yes. Come in.
Sir Private Robert E. Lee Prewitt.
Reporting to the company commander as ordered.
At ease. Where’s that service record?
Born in Kentucky enlisted first at Fort Myer Virginia.
“Bugle Corps First Bugler.”
Prewitt I always make it a policy to talk to my new men.
Now I have a fine smooth-running outfit.
If I like a soldier he can get to be a noncommissioned officer
quicker here than anywhere else.
But he has to show me that he’s got it on the ball.
What kind of trouble were you in in the Bugle Corps?
– No trouble sir. – What made you transfer out then?
It was a personal matter.
– Something you wanted to ask Sergeant? – Why yes sir.
Prewitt you was a corporal in the Bugle Corps.
You took a bust to buck private to transfer to an infantry outfit.
Why? Because you like to hike?
Or was it because you couldn’t stand to bugle?
It was a personal matter.
That’s up to the company commander to decide.
Well?
I was First Bugler for two years.
The topkick had a friend who transferred in from another outfit.
The next day he was made First Bugler over me.
I was a better bugler.
And you asked out on account of that?
Maybe it ain’t sensible but that’s the reason.
His feelings were hurt. Kids they send us now
Well we’ll get your stripes back for you maybe
an extra one for good measure.
Do you know why you were assigned to “G” Company?
No sir.
I pulled a few strings. I’m the regimental boxing coach you know.
Yes sir.
I saw your fight with Connors in the Bowl year before last.
– You should have won it. – Thank you sir.
Our regiment got beaten in the finals last December
but I mean to win this year.
All I’ve needed was a top middleweight.
I’m sorry sir. I quit fighting.
Quit fighting? When? What for?
Well over a year ago.
Maybe you heard about what happened with Dixie Wells?
You mean that fellow that got hurt?
– Yes sir. – Yes I heard about that.
It’s too bad. I can understand how you feel. But those things happen.
That’s why I decided I would quit sir.
You might as well say stop war because one man got killed.
Our fighting program is the best morale builder we have.
I’ve got a mighty sour company bugler.
– How’d you like the job? – Not if it means fighting.
Looks to me as if you’re trying to acquire
a reputation as a lone wolf Prewitt.
You should know that in the army it’s not the individual that counts.
Well you’ll find that we won’t put any pressure on you in my outfit.
Just don’t make any mistakes in it that’s all.
I’ve got to go into town. Anything else for me today Sergeant?
The company fund report has got to be made out it’s due tomorrow.
– You make it out. Is that all? – No sir.
Well whatever it is you fix it up.
If there’s anything that has to go in this afternoon sign my name.
– I won’t be back. – Yes sir.
He’d strangle in his own spit if he didn’t have me around here
to swab his throat out for him.
走吧
Come on.
You been in the army what now Prewitt? Five years? Five and a half?
是的
Yeah.
Don’t you think it’s about time you got smart?
You know what you did just now when you turned down Dynamite Holmes?
You put your head in a noose.
Things are softer for a boxer in this outfit.
Otherwise you’d better know how to soldier.
I can soldier with any man.
This place is getting’ to be like the Royal Hawaiian Hotel.
Who is that?
She’s Captain Holmes’ wife.
You’ll fight Prewitt.
You’ll fight because Captain Holmes wants to be Major Holmes.
He’s got an idea he’ll make it if he gets a winning team.
And if you don’t do it for him you’ll do it for me.
‘Cause my job is to keep him happy see?

-l don’t know. -l ask because the smell makes one quite ill.
You know, l read some advertisement about paints…
…and, of course, one shouldn’t judge on so little evidence, but l–
-After you, Father. -One finds it difficult to believe…
…that there are paints with no smell.
Do you know of any paints that do not smell, Father Michael?
Well, don’t think of it. lt doesn’t matter.
How fortunate we are to have Keller with us.
The man is clever about everything. Before he came six months ago…
…don’t you remember how all the drains wouldn’t work…
…and the windows would not open?
One can learn a great deal from him.
Father Benoit and his bicycle are in time for breakfast.
Good morning, Father Millars, Father Michael.
-Good morning. -Morning.
Seriously, must you keep your bicycle in the hall, Father Benoit?
lt doesn’t always fall, and l don’t seem to know where else.
-lt’s lucky he doesn’t have a horse. -Would you pass me the butter, please?
Mrs. Keller, would you ask your husband to look at my front tire?
-lt’s flat. Could you, please? -My husband? But it is Wednesday.
-He’s not here. -Thank you, no.
On Wednesdays, he attends to Mr. Villette’s garden.
Then will you tell him when he comes back, please?
Yes, Father, l’ll tell him when he comes back.
Now, now, Father Benoit, you should learn how to patch a tire.
One should be able to take care of one’s possessions.
One has a face, one would shave it.
-One has a– -Excuse me, please.
Good morning, Father. Monsieur Villette’s been murdered.
早安
Good morning.
-Good morning, Father. -Good morning.
-l had an appointment here. -Appointment? With Villette? Well, he’s dead.
Yes, l know. ls there anything l can do?
Well, perhaps Mr. Larrue would like to see you. Come in, Father.

We’re just two little girls From Little Rock
We lived on the wrong side Of the tracks
But the gentlemen friends Who used to call
They never did seem to mind at all
They came to the wrong side Of the tracks
Then someone broke my heart In Little Rock
So I up and left the pieces there
Like a little lost lamb I roamed about
I came to New York and I found out
That men are the same way everywhere
I was young and determined To be wined and dined and ermined
And I worked at it All around the clock
Now one of these days In my fancy clothes
I’m goin’ back home and punch the nose Of the one who broke my heart
The one who broke my heart
The one who broke my heart In Little Rock
Little Rock,Little Rock Little Rock
I learned an awful lot in Little Rock
And here’s some advice I’d like to share
Find a gentleman
Who is shy or bold
Or short or tall
Or young or old
As long as the guy’s a millionaire
For a kid from a small street I did very well on Wall Street
Though I never owned a share of stock
And now that I’m known In the biggest banks
I’m a goin’ back home And give my thanks
To the one who broke my heart
Dorothy,wait a minute.
Louie, will you ask Mr. Esmond to come back to our dressing room.
He’s sitting in his usual place.
Right away,Miss Blake.
What’s the rush? He’s not gonna run away.
I know,but I just can’t wait. For what?
Dorothy.Didn’t you notice? His pocket was bulging.
That could be a bag of gumdrops.
No,it was square bulge,like a box for a ring.
I think he’s got a present for me.
You know, you’re the only girl in the world
that can stand on a stage with a spotlight in your eye
and still see a diamond inside a man’s pocket.
Thank you,Louie.
Good evening,Mr. Esmond.
Gee,thanks,’cause that makes me feel all warm inside.
Mr. Esmond! Is it the right size?
It can never be too big. Do you think it’s too small,Dorothy?
It looks like it ought to have a highball around it.
I mean, does it fit your finger?
Yes,it fits perfect.
Daddy,I’ll bet you made me the happiest girl in the world.
I don’t know what you do,honey
unless you use Novocaine on your lipstick?
Daddy? Daddy? May I tell Dorothy?
If you wish.
Dorothy,Mr. Esmond and I are going to be married.
To each other?
Of course to each other. Who else to?
I don’t know about you Gus.
I always sort of figured Lorelei would end up with the Secretary of the Treasury.
Dorothy,guess what.
On saturday we’re sailing on the Isle de Paris. “Ile” de Paris.
We’re going to be married in Europe.
Why not getting married in America and then go to Europe?
Or is that old fashioned way? Well,we’ve made our plans.
请进
Come in.
Mr. Esmond,a long distance call for you.
Oh dear. From Dayton,Ohio.
Thank you very much,I’ll be right there.
It must be Father.
I hope nothing’s happened. I’ll meet you at my table, dear.
Father! Never misses,Gus’ old man. Right on cue.
Too bad,honey.
Nothing’s going wrong this time.
Lorelei,
the old boy is not about to let you commit matrimony with his son.
I think he’d rather shove him down an elevator shaft.
Dorothy,I’m sailing on Saturday, with or without Mr. Esmond.
And I’m not coming back from Europe until he comes and gets me.
When we’re in France,
where his father can’t phone him twice a day
Well,Gus will never let you go alone.
Sometimes Mr. Esmond finds it very difficult to say no to me.
Well,that’s very possible.
Come on,guys,we can’t check the roll if you don’t stick together.
Check your passport right over there.
Thank you.
请问
Pardon please
is this the way to Europe,France?
哪里
To where?
Not Europe,France,honey.
France is in Europe. Who said it wasn’t?
Well,you wouldn’t say
“is this the way to North America,Mexico”? Would you?
If that’s where I want to go,I would. The dealer passes.
you’re supposed to be the chaperone on this trip.
Now,let’s get this straight,Gus:
The chaperone job’s is to see that nobody else has any fun.
But nobody chaperones the chaperone. Dorothy That’s why I’m so right for this job.
‘When the war came in 1939, ‘the Navy took me out of the merchant service, where I belong, ‘and put me in command of one of the new convoy escort vessels ‘that were being built on the Clyde.
