Night and the city.
The night is tonight, tomorrow night…
or any night.
The city is London.
Mary?
Mary?
You won’t find any money there, Harry.
What do you mean, spying on me?
I, uh… I was just looking for a cigarette.
嗯
Mmm.
Would I steal from you? What makes you think I…
-Who are you running away from now? -Running? Me?
Now, you know me better than that.
Three days and three nights, and not a word from you.
Well, I’ve been very busy.
For all I knew, you were lying in the gutter
somewhere with a knife in your back.
Lying in the gutter?
Now, look, sweetheart. I’ll tell you what happened.
I was in Birmingham.
-Birmingham? -Yes!
There’s a fellow up there starting a new greyhound track.
And he wants me for a partner.
It’s the chance of a lifetime, Mary.
I’ll be in on the ground floor.
I only expected to be gone for a day,
but when I saw that layout I stayed over.
And when you see… Look, honey. Look, here’s the plan.
How much?
“How much”?
Look, Harry, we’ve been through this a thousand times.
How much?
Oh. Mmm. Well, all right.
For our share, it’s only £300.
-£300, and it’s a life of ease and plenty. -No!
You’ve got the money. You’ve got it right here.
Sure. Sure, I’ve got it. But not for any greyhound track.
-Why, last month it was… -But this is different, Mary.
This can’t lose!
Oh, Harry, why can’t you ever grow up?
Harry, you gotta get hold of yourself.
You can’t go on forever always running, always in a sweat.
Do you think I enjoy working night after night
at the Silver Fox…
getting drunks drunker?
But I’m sticking it out, waiting for the day we can marry…
lead decent, normal lives.
Remember them, Harry?
Nice people. Nice to know and be with.
Remember the plans they used to make?
The kind of life they were going to live?
I just want to be somebody.
I’ve got to hurry, Harry.
You’d better hurry too.
-Nosseross is angry with you. -Let him wait.
Him and his big, fat belly.
I’m not leaving here.
You mean you’re afraid to leave.
How much?
I… paid him everything but five pounds.
He’s the one that put up the money for the football pool.
Wait here.
进来
Come in!
-Adam! -Open the windows!
Don’t tell me you tried cooking spaghetti again.
Yes! With the usual disastrous results.
Mary, get that siphon bottle there! Quickly!
-The soda? -Yes! Hurry! Hurry!
-Here! -Oh!
Don’t just stand there, woman! Squirt! Squirt!
行了
There.
You’re just in time to enjoy
the most heavenly spaghetti dinner.
Aw, thanks, but I’ve just had breakfast, unfortunately.
I admit it does look a little overdone.
Oh, well. Try again next week.
Probably starve doing it,
but I’ll master it in the end, I promise.
That’s the thing that keeps us apart, you know.
-Your spaghetti? -Yes, in a way.
When I’m having my spaghetti,
you’re looking for your morning toast.
Do you think we might ever arrange our day
to meet somewhere around teatime?
Come on, sit down.
Oh, here. Let me get these hideous little monsters
拿开
out of the way.
Oh, I think he’s cute.
-She. -Well, she’s cute.
The shops tell me it’s the best-selling design
I’ve given them so far.
-Discouraging. -You’re probably pleased as punch.
Of course. Sit down and really be comfortable.
Thanks, Adam, but I’ve got to get on to work.
-I’ve come to ask for a favor. -Name it.
Could you let me have three pounds until tomorrow?
Help yourself. Punch the night bell.
The old lady of Threadneedle Street
很大方
is well stocked and quite generous.
-It does look like the Bank of England. -Well, it should.
I spent half my youth reproducing it.
-It’s very good. -Of course.
Wonderful!
You’re very clever, Adam.
I am about unimportant things.
请自便
Help yourself.
Thanks, Adam. I happen to need this right now for…
-Well, I didn’t expect them to deliver the –Sure.
Harry’s back.
You knew that, didn’t you?
These walls. Just one big, happy family.
He gets so excited, almost like a child.
But you know, Adam, one has to fight
not to get pulled in by his excitement.
His ideas always have so much imagination.
I know. Harry’s an artist without an art.
What does that mean?
Well, that’s something that’d make a man very unhappy, Mary…
groping for the right lever, the means with which to express himself.
Yes, he is that, isn’t he?
I like that, Adam. It’s a very nice thought.
Yes, but it can be dangerous.
Oh. no, you don’t. Not again.
Every time you talk,
you mix me up so I can’t think straight for a week.
-Thanks, Adam. -Anything.
Anytime.
-Hi, hi, Harry! -Evening, Maggie!
Can’t win, boys! Watch it!
Evening, boys.

Yes, this is Sunset Boulevard, Los Angeles, California.
It’s about 5:00 in the morning.
That’s the homicide squad…
complete with detectives and newspapermen.
A murder has been reported from one of those great big houses…
in the ten thousand block.
You’ll read about it in the late editions, I’m sure.
You’ll get it over your radio and see it on television…
because an old-time star is involved…
one of the biggest.
But before you hear it all distorted
and blown out of proportion…
before those Hollywood columnists get their hands on it…
maybe you’d like to hear the facts… the whole truth.
If so, you’ve come to the right party.
You see, the body of a young man was found…
floating in the pool of her mansion…
with two shots in his back and one in his stomach.
Nobody important, really.
Just a movie writer with a couple of B pictures to his credit.
The poor dope. He always wanted a pool.
Well, in the end he got himself a pool…
only the price turned out to be a little high.
Let’s go back about six months
and find the day when it all started.
I was living in an apartment house above Franklin and Ivar.
Things were tough at the moment.
I hadn’t worked in a studio for a long time.
So I sat there, grinding out original stories, two a week.
Only I seemed to have lost my touch.
Maybe they weren’t original enough.
Maybe they were too original.
All I know is, they didn’t sell.
谁
Yeah?
– Joseph C. Gillis? – That’s right.
We’ve come for the car.
什么车
What car?
1946 Plymouth convertible,
California license 40-R-116.
Where are the keys?
Why should I give you the keys?
Because the company’s played ball long enough…
because you’re three payments behind,
and because we got a court order.
Now, come on. The keys.
Or do you want us to jack it up and haul it away?
Relax, fans. The car isn’t here.
Oh, is that so?
I loaned it to a friend. He took it down to Palm Springs.
Had to get away for his health, I suppose.
If you don’t believe me, look in the garage.
Sure, sure, we believe you. Only now we want you to believe us!
That car better be here tomorrow or there’s gonna be fireworks.
– You say the cutest things. – Ha.
Well, I needed about $ 290…
and I needed it real quick, or I’d lose my car.
It wasn’t in Palm Springs, and it wasn’t in the garage.
I was way ahead of the finance company.
I knew they’d be coming around, and I wasn’t taking any chances.
So I kept it across the street in a lot
behind Rudy’s Shoeshine Parlor.
Rudy never asked any questions about your finances.
He’d just look at your heels and know the score.
I had an original story kicking around Paramount.
My agent told me it was dead as a doornail.
But I knew a big shot over there who’d always liked me.
The time had come to take a little advantage of it.
His name was Sheldrake.
He was a smart producer with a set of ulcers to prove it.
All right, Gillis, you’ve got five minutes.
What’s your story about?
It’s about a baseball player,
a rookie shortstop batting.347.
– Uh-huh. – Poor kid was mixed up in a holdup.
But he’s trying to go straight.
Except some gamblers won’t let him.
So they tell the kid
he’s got to throw the World Series or else, huh?
More or less, except for the end.
I’ve got a gimmick that’s real good.
Uh-huh. You got a title?
Bases Loaded. There’s a 40-page outline.
Call Readers Department.
Find out what they have on Bases Loaded.
They’re pretty hot about it over at Twentieth,
except Zanuck’s all wet.
Can you see Ty Power as a shortstop?
You’ve got the best man for it right here on this lot. Alan Ladd.
Be a good change of pace for Ladd.
Another thing, it’s simple to shoot.
Lots of outdoor stuff. You could make it all for under a million.
Excuse me.
A great part for Bill Demarest…
a trainer, an old-time player who got beaned,
goes out of his head.
Hello, Mr. Sheldrake.
On that Bases Loaded, I covered it with a two-page synopsis.
– Thank you. – But I wouldn’t bother.
– What’s wrong with it? – It’s from hunger.
Nothing for Ladd?
It’s just a rehash of something
that wasn’t very good to begin with.
I’m sure you’ll be glad to meet Mr. Gillis. He wrote it.
This is Miss Kramer.
The name is Schaefer. Betty Schaefer.
Right now I wish I could crawl in a hole and pull it in after me.
If I could be of any help…
Oh, I’m sorry, Mr. Gillis,
but I just didn’t think it was any good.
I found it flat and trite.
Exactly what kind of material do you recommend?
James Joyce? Dostoyevsky?
I just think that pictures should say a little something.
Oh, one of the message kids.
Just a story won’t do.
You’d have turned down Gone With the Wind.
No, that was me.
I said, “Who wants to see a Civil War picture?”
Perhaps I hated it
because I’d always heard you had talent.
That was last year. This year I’m trying to earn a living.
So you take plot 27-A, make it glossy, make it slick…
Those are dirty words.
You sound like New York critics.
That’s all, Miss Kramer… Schaefer.
Good-bye, Mr. Gillis.
Next time I’ll write you The Naked and the Dead.
Well, it seems like Zanuck has got himself a baseball picture.
I don’t want you to think
I thought this would win any Academy Award.

After you.
Is this 348?
是的
Yes, it is.
I’ve got a special delivery here.
Oh, that sounds interesting.
It’s for Dowd.
Dowd’s my name. Elwood P.
Here, sir.
Let me give you one of my cards.
That won’t be necessary, sir. Just sign right here.
Beautiful day.
Oh, every day’s a beautiful day.
– There. – Thank you.
He was a nice man.
走吧
Come on.
Thank heavens he’s gone!
Oh, Myrtle, it’s a wonderful feeling
to have your relative out of the house before the company comes.
Mother, you’re sure Uncle Elwood won’t come back
and spoil everything after the guests arrive?
Of course not, dear.
Your uncle always spends the afternoon downtown
at those filthy bars and taverns. You know that.
I’ll go tell the cateress to get started.
Why, Miss Johnson, what are you doing?
走人
Leaving.
Miss Johnson, you were hired to serve as well as cater.
Our guests will be here any minute.
Now, Miss Johnson…
Myrtle, let me handle this, dear.
Miss Johnson, what’s wrong?
There was a man here a minute ago
and he stopped and he spoke to me.
You didn’t tell him anything about our party, did you?
I didn’t tell him nothing.
He gave me his card. Here.
And then he introduced me to somebody.
To whom?
Do you think I’d stay in this house after that?
Mother, people get run over by trucks every day.
Why can’t something like that happen to Uncle Elwood?
Myrtle Mae Simmons, I’m ashamed of you.
Even if people do call your uncle peculiar,
he is still my baby brother.
And this thing is not his fault.
Whose fault is it then?
Now, we’ll get the cook to do the serving.
Come along and lend me a hand, dear.
We haven’t got much time. Elvira!
If it isn’t his fault, whose fault is it?
I know whose fault it is, dear, but I’m not telling.
You’re not telling?
Elvira?
Elvira, you can bring those things in now.
Oh, Mother, why can’t we live like other people?
Myrtle Mae, do I have to keep reminding you
your Uncle Elwood is not living with us,
we’re living with him.
Living with him and his pal!
You promised.
With his pal Harvey!
You said that name.
You promised you wouldn’t say that name and you said it.
Mother, why did grandmother leave
all of her property to Uncle Elwood?
I suppose it was because she died in his arms.
People are sentimental about things like that.
You always say that and it doesn’t make sense.
She couldn’t make out a will after she died, could she?
Oh, Myrtle, don’t be didactic.
It’s not becoming in a young girl.
Besides, men loathe it.
Men! A fine chance I’ve got.
Now, Myrtle, dear, you know the whole idea
of this party this afternoon is to…
Is to get you started socially,
so that you can meet some nice young men.
Oh, what’s the use?
Myrtle Mae Simmons, her uncle,
Elwood P. Dowd, is the biggest…
screwball in town! Who’d want me?
Oh, Myrtle, dear, you’re sweet and you have so much to offer.
I don’t care what anyone says,
there’s something sweet about every young girl.
And a man takes that sweetness and look what he does with it.
Show some poise, dear.
I want you to charm Mrs. Chauvenet.
She has a grandson just about your age.
A lot of good that’ll do if Uncle Elwood comes home.
Well, Uncle Elwood won’t be home this afternoon.
Or will he?
I’m going to telephone Judge Gaffney. We can’t take any chances.
Mother, you better hurry.
Mrs. Halsey and Miss Tewksbury are here already.
Oh, dear. Yes, dear, I am hurrying.
Well, hurry, Mother. They’re getting out of the car!
Judge Gaffney, please. Mrs. Veta Simmons calling.
说
Yes?
Oh. Put her on.
Veta, my girl, this is a pleasure.
Judge, we haven’t got a moment to lose.
I’m having the Wednesday Forum over
for a program tea and reception
for Ethel Chauvenet.
Elwood has just gone out, but I’m so afraid he may come back.
You can understand why.
Oh, hello, Miss Tewksbury, Mrs. Halsey.
Go right into the drawing room.
Myrtle, dear, take their things.
Yes, you’ve got to help me, Judge.
You’ve got to help me. I can’t…
Speak up, speak up, Veta.
What? I can’t make out what you’re talking about.
Is that so?
Oh! Yoo-hoo, Mrs. Strickleberger.
Oh, hello, Mrs. Simmons.
Oh, no, no, no. Yes, that’ll be all right.
You can depend on me.
好的
All right.
Minninger, in a few minutes,
a man will be crossing the square.
He’ll be wearing a hat and coat
and carrying another one over his arms.
I want you to follow him.
If necessary, even confront him. Quietly, of course.
Yes, sir.

Cinderella
You’re as lovely as your name
Cinderella
You’re a sunset in a frame
Though you’re dressed in rags
You wear an air of queenly grace
Anyone can see
A throne would be your proper place
Cinderella
If you give your heart a chance
It will lead you
To the kingdom of romance
There you’ll see your dreams unfold
Cinderella
Cinderella
传说中
In the sweetest story
Ever told
Once upon a time, in a faraway land,
there was a tiny kingdom…
…peaceful, prosperous and rich in romance and tradition.
Here, in a stately chateau,
there lived a widowed gentleman and his little daughter, Cinderella.
Although he was a kind and devoted father,
and gave his beloved child every luxury and comfort,
still he felt she needed a mother’s care.
And so, he married again,
choosing for his second wife a woman of good family,
with two daughters just Cinderella’s age:
By name, Anastasia and Drizella.
It was upon the untimely death of this good man, however,
that the stepmother’s true nature was revealed.
Cold, cruel and bitterly jealous of Cinderella’s charm and beauty,
she was grimly determined to forward the interests
of her own two awkward daughters.
Thus, as time went by,
the chateau fell into disrepair.
For the family fortunes were squandered upon the vain and selfish stepsisters,
while Cinderella was abused, humiliated
and finally forced to become a servant in her own house.
And yet, through it all,
Cinderella remained ever gentle and kind.
For with each dawn, she found new hope that someday
her dreams of happiness would come true.
Well, serves you right, spoiling people’s best dreams.
Yes, l know it’s a lovely morning, but…
…it was a lovely dream too.
What kind of a dream?
an’t tell.
’cause if you tell a wish, it won’t come true.
而且…
And, after all…
A dream is a wish
Your heart makes
When you’re fast asleep
In dreams you will lose
Your heartaches
Whatever you wish for
You keep
Have faith
In your dreams and someday
Your rainbow will come smiling through
No matter how your heart is grieving
If you keep on believing
The dream that you wish
Will come true
Oh, that clock.
Old killoy.
l hear you. ome on, get up, you say.
Time to start another day.
Even he orders me around.
Well, there’s one thing.
They can’t order me to stop dreaming.
And perhaps someday…
The dreams that I wish
Will come true
No matter how your heart is grieving
If you keep on believing
The dream that you wish
Will come true
Look what l found. Over there.
等一下
Wait a minute.
One at a time, please.
Now, Jack, what’s all the fuss about?
New mouse in the house. Brand-new. Never saw it before.
Visitor. Visitor! – Oh, a visitor.
Well, she’ll need a dress…
No, no. – lt’s not a she, it’s a he.
He, he. – Oh, that does make a difference.
He’ll need a acket and shoes… – Gotta get him out!
lt’s in a rat trap. – Where?
ln a trap? Why didn’t you say so?
Now, now, calm down, everybody.
Oh, the poor little thing’s scared to death.
Jack, maybe you better eplain things to him.
Zuk, zuk, Cinderelly.
Now, now. Look, little guy.
Take it easy. Nothin’ to worry about.
We like you. Cinderelly likes you too.
She’s nice, very nice.
That’s better. Come on, now. Zuk, zuk.
Well, that’s better.
Well, let’s ust slip it on for size.
lt is a little snug.
But it’ll have to do.
Now, for a name.
l’ve got one. Octavius.
But for short, we’ll call you Gus. – Like it, Gus-Gus?
Like it? – Gus-Gus.
l’ve got to hurry. See he keeps out of trouble, Jack.
And don’t forget to warn him about the cat.
Zuk, zuk. Look, did you ever see a cat, cat?
Cat, cat? – Cat, cat. Lucify. That’s him.
Meany, sneaky.
Jump at you. Bite at you.
Big, big. Big as a house.
Zuk, zuk, Lucify?
Lucify, zuk, zuk.
Here, kitty, kitty.
come, kitty. Come on.
过来!
Lucifer! Come here!
l’m sorry if Your Highness obects to an early breakfast.
lt’s certainly not my idea to feed you first.
lt’s orders. Come on.
Lucify. ls that Lucify?
Zuk, Lucify. That’s him.
Gus-Gus take-a Lucify and…
…look at! – No, Gus-Gus, no.
Now, listen here. Lucify not funny.
Lucify mean.

That was a bad shot, or else he was impatient.
He must’ve aimed for my head, but he got me in the back.
I was scared. I couldn’t feel anything from my waist down.
I thought I was dying.
It’s funny.
It’s very, very funny.
I was afraid I was gonna die.
Now I’m afraid I’m gonna live.
“Oh, you’ll be walking again in a couple of months,
Lieutenant Wilczek.”
How many months?
I’ve lost count.
But let’s keep it gay. Soldier, repeat after me:
“The war’s over now, and I’m glad I’m still half alive.
I’m a lucky-”
A fine way to treat a Silver Star. – Turn the light out.
Good night.
You know how it is.
You read a lot of things. You hear a lot of things.
You get a lot of misinformation from people who oughta know better.
Okay, let’s summarize what we’ve learned.
Paraplegia is the result of an injury to the spinal cord.
That break in the cord causes immediate and lasting paralysis…
of motion and feeling in the lower body.
In general, most paraplegic patients will, at various times,
suffer all of the following symptoms:
pain, muscular spasms, bed sores,
paralysis of the bladder and bowels.
However, all of these may and can be controlled…
by medical therapy, surgery, proper nutrition,
physical rehabilitation and self-care.
Lastly, the question of walking.
In almost every case, the word “walk” must be forgotten.
It no longer exists.
In short, most paraplegics…
must content themselves with life in a wheelchair.
Make yourselves accept that.
It’ll make it a lot easier for them.
Well, I’ve talked a long time.
Perhaps there are some questions you’d like to ask.
Doctor, my boy – he’s only 19.
是的
I know.
But with proper care, he may live to be 90.
Doctor-Brock, is it?
Well, this condition- there must be some cure.
Paraplegia isn’t a death sentence any longer.
I’m happy to say that in this hospital…
the mortality rate has been less than three percent.
I didn’t mean that. I meant the spine injury.
Surely there must be some way of healing it.
There must be specialists somewhere.
Madam, there is no method known to medical science…
for the regeneration of spinal cord tissue.
没有
None.
医生
Doctor,
my husband and I,
we have a little girl.
We’ve always wanted to have a large family,
but now if we could just have at least one more for the child’s sake.
Will it be possible?
Well, that’s difficult to say.
In some cases, it is possible.
However, I can’t discuss your husband here.
I’ll be happy to meet with you whenever you say.
Dr. Brock, what about the bladder and bowels?
How badly are they affected?
Most men find that they’re capable of retraining themselves…
and in time achieving regularity in these functions.
Any more questions?
Dr. Brock.
We’ve been married nine years.
I thought my husband and I knew each other as well as anyone could,
and I want to keep our marriage going.
But… he’s so changed.
他变了
He’s different.
He isn’t different.
He’s the same man with a spinal cord injury.
But when I try… – Oh, I know right now he’s unhappy.
He’s depressed.
He feels himself totally dependent on others.
He says to himself, “I’m not a man any longer.
I can’t make a woman happy.”
ls it any wonder he finds it difficult to adjust to the situation?
But… how long will it take?
Face it It’s going to take time.
It’s going to take patience.
For you and for him.
But… will we have anything in common now?
No more, no less than you had before.
Dr. Brock,
if you were a woman, would you marry a paraplegic?
Might as well just ask me if I want to get married, period.
And the answer to that is no.
However, this young lady here is marrying one of our patients.
You might check with her.
Any other questions?
If not, suppose we adjourn the meeting?
And please feel free to consult with me whenever
you have any problems.
Because you will. Good night.
Good night. Good night.
医生？
Doctor?
More questions? – I’m afraid so.
You have a patient here named Bud Wilczek.
Kenneth Wilczek.
We were engaged before he went overseas.
Well, after he was hurt, he wrote and said it was all off.
He’s never even let me come to see him.
Why don’t you leave him alone?
Because he doesn’t really want it that way.
I know he doesn’t.
I know why he’s acting like this. I’m no fool.
Besides, you made it very clear just now.
Why don’t you write to him?
I have, naturally. He doesn’t answer.
I was so sure you’d help me.
Don’t you understand?
This is the third hospital I’ve followed him to.
Yes, I understand. What do you want to do?
I want to marry him. – Why?
Why? For the usual reasons.
Do you have parents?
Yes. – Do they feel as you do?
Why shouldn’t they?
Anyway, they’re not engaged to him; I am.
Well, what do you want me to do?
You’re his doctor. You could talk to him.
I can’t interfere in his personal life.

This film is based on paintings,
drawings and sculptures
made by Picasso between
the y ears 1902 and 1949.
”Guernica,” painted
provided the main focus
of this film.
We would like to thank…
…as well as the Museum of Modern
Art and the Louis eLeiris Gallery
for providing us with
all the necessary documents.
Guernica…
is a small town
in the Bis caye region,
the traditional capital
of the Basque Country.
在那里
That’s where the oak tree
be came the sacreds ymbol
of Basque freedom
and traditions.
Guernica’s relevance is mainly
historic and s entimental.
On April 26th, 1 93 7,
in the early afternoon hours,
a s eries of Nazi planes
incessantly bombed Guernica
for three
and a half hours.
The city was burnt
to the ground.
2,000 people died–
all civilians.
The bombing was part
of an experiment
to determine the combined effects
of incendiary and explosive bombs
on civilian populations.
Friendly faces by the fire,
friendly faces in the cold
Oppressed, humiliated,
beaten, kept in the dark,
Friendly faces
faced with nothing
Poor faces, sacrificed
Your death will be
a warning to all
Death,
an overthrown heart
The y made you pay for bread
with your life
They made you pay
for the sky, the earth,
Water and sleep,
They made you pay
for misery
Sweet actors,
So sad but so sweet,
Actors in perpetual drama,
You weren’t expecting death.
The fear and courage
to live and die
Death, so difficult
and simple
Women and children have
the same treasure in their eyes
Men safeguard it
the way they can.
People in Guernica
are simple people.
Bullets finish off
Bullets play with children,
Women and children have
the same red roses in their eyes.
Their blood
for all to see
Odd to think we were scared
of lightning, scared of thunder.
How naive. Thunder’s an angel
and lighting its wings.
We’d never been to the basement,
for fear of seeing nature’s horrors.
Wearing helmets and boots–
polite and handsome men–
aviators drop their bombs.
With such care.
Down on the ground, chaos.
Blood on the men.
Blood on the beast
A harvest, repugnant
and more disgusting
The earth turns
in your orbits
You, rotting desolation
Death interrupted
the comfort of time
You are now left
Colonel gilfillan will address the men.
Aye, aye, sir.
Now hear this.
Now hear this.
Marines, company b, first battalion, this is colonel gilfillan.
We’re gonna be landing on a ap-held island before long.
A couple of things I’ve said to you before I think are worth repeating.
When you hit that beach, there’s gonna be a lot of noise and smoke and confusion.
You’re gonna have to keep your eyes on your squad leaders and platoon leaders.
I don’t want any lost little lambs runnin’ around.
You know where lambs end up.
And let’s get it straight, this is a big island.
There’s a lot about it we don’t know yet, and a lot we’re gonna have to find out from the aps themselves.
We used to say that the only good ap was a dead ap.
I’ll remind you that that’s changed.
From here on in, a good ap is also a ap prisoner who tells us things.
Now, this is an order.
Whenever possible, you will take prisoners.
I say again, you will take prisoners.
Some of us were together at guadalcanal and again at tarawa.
I was proud to be with you.
I know it will be the same after this.
Believe me, this trip is necessary.
All hands, good luck.
I’ll see you on the beach.
Wouldn’t you know, I’d get a stinkin’ cold.
What’s the matter, Whitney?
I don’t like the dreams I’ve been having.
Ah, don’t let it worry you.
Pvelanded on two ap islands, and I’m still here.
Yeah, but this guy I’m a replacement for, where’s he?
Got a half inch of whiskey.
It’s all I got left in the world.
You want it? I don’t drink.
You will.
Gonna make some more the first minute I get.
No, thanks, I don’t drink.
Ok, ust take this ashore for me.
Come on.
What is it?
It’s a gazintuh.
This goes into that.
It’s a still!
Shh!
ust get it ashore.
Watch out for sergeant zelenko.
But I don’t drink.
Yeah, I know. You told me, but I do.
Now hear this.
Now hear this.
All troops lay below and prepare to debark.
All troops lay below and prepare to debark.
Hey, you, Whitney.
What are you carrying, a still?
Sergeant, I don’t… Now, look, pal, we’ve a war to fight.
Yeah, and you’re gonna fight it sober.
Sergeant, I don’t drink.
Come with me.
Now, listen to me… You new men… Step up here.
Don’t let slattery give you a snow ob and get you into trouble.
He’s got no more sense than a setting hen in a hurricane.
That’s why he’s been a private longer than any man in the marine corps… And he’ll die a private.
Don’t have nothin’ to do with him.
Except when things get tough, stick to him like plaster.
The best fighting man I know.
But before and after, he’s a no-good, money-burnin’, gin-drinkin’ horsehead.
Now, let’s get moving.
Got a lot of coal to dig.
嘿,zelenko !
Hey, zelenko!
Where’s lieutenant Anderson?
Coffman, you shouldn’t worry so much.
He’ll be here.
Yeah, but he said he’d meet us on the deck, like always.
Take your pack off and loosen your leggings.
Did he ever miss a train before?
Hey, where’s the lieutenant?
I don’t know.
Lieutenant, I… Lieutenant, I… I can’t make it.
I’m sick.
You gotta scratch me out.
Ewmd
Ewmd please, lieutenant… You’ve gotta get me out of this landing.
I can’t get away with it anymore after… Tarawa, the canal.
Call me a psycho, court-martial me.
I don’t care!
The war’s comin’ out of my ears! I’m sick!
So am I.
Do you hear me, lieutenant?
Do you hear me?
I hear you.
Both of us had it comin’ out of our ears.
So what do I tell him, think of ice cream sodas, fourth of uly?
There are no bands playing here.
The first time I saw him he was ust as scared… A hundred years ago.
Greetings, on this first day of the new term.
Oh, I see we have a transfer from Clinton high school.
Mr. Conroy, have you ever had chemistry before?
Conroy.
Well, speak up. Are you tongue-tied?
他s-s-stutters。
He s-s-stutters.
安静。
Quiet.
I apologize, Mr. Conroy.
You may sit down.
All right, Conroy, repeat slowly after me, hope is the mother of all men.
Hope… is the mother… Of all men.
Uh, h-h-hope is t-t-the… Now, wait a minute.
Read that top line, will ya?
The top one.
嗯…s-s-September……23日……1940.
Uh… s-s-September… 23rd… 1940.
There you are. You see?
You don’t stutter as much when you read.
No, not… not much.
Now, Stuart, listen to me.

Don’t ask me. I don’t watch the clock. I own the joint.
够了
That’s enough.
Well, do you see the man who pulled the stickup last night?
I don’t know.
– What do you mean, you don’t know? – He had a hat on.
Put on your hats.
Well?
He was tall, you say. He had on a brown suit and a wide-brim hat.
All right, don’t you see him?
Well, come on! Is that him?
No, it isn’t him.
– Okay. – That’s all.
– Lieutenant Ditrich? – What is it?
Commissioner wants to see you in his office right away.
Sit down, Lieutenant.
Thank you, sir.
Thirty-nine thefts, 33 burglaries, 18 robberies,
seven assaults, five morals offenses
in the past 30 days.
Quite a record, even for the Fourth Precinct, Lieutenant Ditrich.
We know the guy who’s been pulling most of the stickups, Commissioner.
Name’s Dix Handley. He was in the show-up this morning,
but our witness got cold feet and backed down.
– What can you do? – Lock up the witness! Scare him worse!
It’s your job knowing what to do.
As things are, the only merchants safe from harm in your precinct
are those who take wages on the horses.
I want to know why those parlors are still operating.
I close them down, but they only open up again.
You don’t close ’em hard enough! Rip out the phones! Smash up the furniture!
People like to bet the horses, sir, and just because the law says no —
I don’t want your opinion of the law.
– Is that all, sir? – No, that’s not all.
Where is Erwin Riedenschneider?
– I’m waiting to hear on that, sir. – You don’t know where he is, do you?
No, sir, but we ought to get word from our stoolies.
It was all dumped in your lap.
He left state prison yesterday at 12 noon, took a train for this city.
Time of arrival, 3:17.
All you had to do was spot him, stay with him for 24 hours.
If he didn’t register, lock him up.
But what happens? He loses you five blocks from the depot.
And one of the most dangerous criminals alive is now at large in this city.
The two men on that detail ought to get medals for dumbness.
They were assigned by you. You oughta get one too.
Ditrich, I can do three things about you.
I can reduce you to patrolman and send you down to Five Corners,
I can bring you up for departmental trial on charges of incompetence,
or I can give you one more chance to make good on your responsibilities.
I think that’ll be the greatest punishment of all.
Thank you, sir.
There’s the number you’re looking for.
But it’s dark. You want me to wait?
I wouldn’t go parading around this neighborhood with a suitcase.
Some of these young punks might clip ya just to get a clean shirt.
– Yeah? – I want to see Cobby.
– Who are you? – Just say Doc is here and would like to see him.
Wait here. You’d better be on the legit, pal.
What do you got?
三张三
Three threes.
Well, where the devil is he?
All right, make it fast. I’m a busy man. What do you want?
– I just got out today. – Oh, so that’s it.
I’m tired of you guys that fell putting the bite on me. I’m no First National Bank.
– I got a proposition for you. – All you guys have.
– Maybe you didn’t get who I was. – I never seen you before.
– Come on, come on. What is it? – Maybe you’ve heard of me.
The Professor? Or Herr Doktor, maybe.
You mean, you are Riedenschneider?
Well, why didn’t you say so?
Come on in, Doc. Come on in.
Sit down, Doc. Sit down.
– Have a drink? – Nothing to drink.
I got out of the habit behind the walls.
– That’s all it is — a habit. – Well, here’s to the drink habit.
It’s the only one I got that don’t get me into trouble.
Well, Doc, what’s on your mind?
I got a proposition. A big one.
– How big is big? – Too big for you, Cobby.
Now, wait, Doc. I don’t like to brag, but I’m doing all right.
Makin’ book. I’m in the chips.
– What kind of proposition is it? – A plan for a caper.
And it’s a good one. I could sell it for $100,000 on the open market,
but that would be throwing money away.
I prefer to execute it myself and make —
– How much? – Half a million dollars.
Maybe even more.
Of course I will have to do a little checking, as the plan is some years old.
But not much checking. Not much.
I need roughly 50,000 to operate.
Fifty thousand?
No, no, no, I don’t see.
Of course. I thought maybe Mr. Emmerich.
What do you know about Mr. Emmerich?
