when I found myself unemployed.
Then I became occupied in liquidating members of the opposite sex.
It was a strictly business enterprise to support a home and family.
Let me assure you, the career of a Bluebeard is by no means profitable.
Only a person with undaunted optimism would embark on such a venture.
Close your mouth. It causes a draft.
What about your two submarines?
Get up. Do as you’re told!
Get your husband up. I’m reading.
There. Now, look what you’ve done!
If you’d gone, it wouldn’t have happened.
…I do not choose to prolong this tawdry bickering any further.
…for his cathedral fund.
That has been my lucky piece.
Not that it’s ever brought me any luck, except knowing you.
It’s stopped snowing, and…
Oh, if only we could spend Christmas back here…
…where we were so happy with you and our old friends.
Now, now, now.
Good night, professor.
I’ll see you again very soon.
It can’t be soon enough.
Good night, Julia.
Why, professor.
How fine to see you again after all these years.
How well you look.
– How are you? – Never better.
– And you? – Oh, quite well also, thank you.
[CHUCKLES]
I don’t think you remember me.
Oh, that’s preposterous. Of course I do.
– Where did we meet? – Now, professor, after all these years…
Well, now, just a moment. It wasn’t Vienna, was it?
Vienna. Beautiful old Vienna.
– The university? – The university.
– When I was lecturing on Roman history? – That’s it, professor.
What great lectures they were and what a one you were with the ladies.
Oh, fancy you remembering that.
– I must confess, I had my moments. – And still have.
– Where are you going? – That car.
I couldn’t help noticing your tender parting from Julia.
– You know Julia? – In a way, yes.
Poor child.
– She’s unhappy? – Yes.
When were you in Vienna?
Oh, I’ve been there many times.
I’m interested in Julia and Henry. What seems to be their trouble?
I never see Henry anymore.
He has no time for riffraff like me.
He now consorts with the vulgar rich like Mrs. Hamilton.
Do you know she had me fired from the university here?

– Aren’t you tired? – No.
There’s so much of it.
Do you think we’ll live here all the time, Pop?
Want to?
那当然
Sure. I like it.
Why did we always live in California?
Oh, I was born there, got married there,
just went right on living there.
Did Mother ever come with you to New York?
No. I was here by myself once for three days.
You still think of her, Tommy?
Sort of. Not all the time.
Just sometimes.
How old was I when she died, Pop?
You were four years old.
很久了
A long time.
You ever going to get married again?
Maybe. Want me to?
I don’t care. I like it fine this way.
But Grandma says you’re getting tougher
and tougher to have around the house.
She does, does she?
Any more complaints from Grandma?
She says you’re too picky and choosy.
Where are we going?
To meet Grandma at Saks.
Hey, Pop, look at that.
What’s he supposed to be doing?
That’s a statue of Atlas, Tommy.
He’s carrying the world on his shoulders.
No kidding? That’s what Grandma says you’re doing.
And she wishes you’d leave the world alone a while.
Oh, yeah? Looks like I’m gonna have to slug Grandma.
Hey, we’re late. Grandma’s going to slug us.
Come on.
I just love waiting for people.
I always say there’s nothing as much fun as standing around
waiting for people who are always late.
Well, we’re late, Ma,
because I’ve been carrying the world around on my shoulders.
It’s kind of heavy. You can’t walk too fast.
Put it down gently, dear,
and give me some money for your son’s shoes.
Now I’ll thank you, Tommy, to keep your mouth shut hereafter.
I told Pop he was getting tougher and tougher
to have around the house, too.
How much are shoes in New York?
Better give her 10 bucks.
Wish me luck, Ma. I’m going up to the magazine now.
Good luck, Phil.
I hope it’s something you want this time, and not too far away.
It’ll be right here. Otherwise, Minify wouldn’t have
gone through all the trouble to get us the apartment.
Does Mr. Minify always tell you what to write?
Don’t you ever think up what to write yourself?
Well, yeah, I think sometimes for myself.
Well, I’m late. Have fun.
– How do you do? – How do you do?
You better clear things up now, Jessie,

When I start out to make a fool of myself&#82 […]

When I start out to make a fool of myself…
there’s very little can stop me.
If I’d known where it would end,
I’d have never let anything start…
if I’d been in my right mind, that is.
But once I’d seen her… once I’d seen her…
I was not in my right mind, for quite some time.
“Good evening, ” says I, thinking myself a very gay dog, indeed.
Here was a beautiful girl all by herself, and me…
with plenty of time. Nothing to do but get myself into trouble.
Some people can smell danger. Not me.
I asked her if she’d have a cigarette.
It’s my last, I’ve been looking forward to it. Don’t disappoint me.
But I don’t smoke.
That’s how I found her. And from that moment on…
I did not use my head very much, except to be thinking of her.
But in the park, in those days…
the rough young fellas used to be staging hold-ups and the like.
Help! Help!
However, these young fellas were not professionals.
And that’s maybe the reason why I start out in this story…
a little bit like a hero, which I most certainly am not.
The cab driver was waking up. He was okay.
So I borrowed his carriage to drive the lady home.
In a short while, she recovered herself…
and brightened up, what with the things I told her…
to get her mind off the scare she’d had and to set her thinking…
as well, of the brave fella that had rescued her.
Rosalie, fair Rosalie.
– A name I’m after calling you. – Rosalie?
Why not? It’s a gorgeous, romantical name entirely.
– I’m Michael. – You’re a character.
I’m just a poor sailor man…
and him with the Princess of Central Park at his side.
Princess Rosalie. I wonder now:
Where does the princess come from?
I don’t know why she should tell you, but…
Well, her parents were Russian, White Russian.
You never heard of the place where she comes from.
Would Her Highness care to gamble?
Gamble? She’s done it for a living.
I’ll bet you a dollar I’ve been to the place of your were born.
– Zhifu. – It’s on the China coast, Zhifu.
The second wickedest city in the world.
– The first? – Macau. Wouldn’t you say?
I would. I worked there.
You worked in Macau?
Here’s your dollar. How do you rate Shanghai?
– I worked there, too. – Yeah, as a gambler?
– Well… – I hope you were luckier than tonight.
You need more than luck in Shanghai.
– Do you know what? – What?
I bet I could drive the car from down there inside with you.
There’s a police car on the other road.
Let’s get out of the park.
The horse and cart will make it easy for the cops to find us.
You don’t like them very much.
They can struggle without our doing their work for them.
Watch where you’re going, Mac! Get that nag out of here!
Now the cops are bound to pick us up.
We’d best leave the cab here and walk.
– You certainly don’t like the police. – I do not.
My car’s right there in the garage, anyway.
Tell me, Michael…
is there a reason why the police don’t like you?
Well, they’ve never put me in jail in America.
You know, the nicest jails are in Australia.
The worst are in Spain.
– What law did you break in Spain? – I killed a man.
Just now, you almost killed a girl.
Is there a law against that?
Try it. You won’t like the jails here.
They put you in jail for murder here? I didn’t think so.
A man killed his wife in Frisco last week.
She’d gone to the icebox for a bit of supper.
He thought she was a burglar, he said.
He shot her five times in the head.
– Number 47! – He had a good lawyer.
I saw his picture in the paper. Bainbridge or something.
– Bannister. – Arthur Bannister.
It said he was the greatest criminal lawyer, the greatest criminal.
– Some people think he is. – Here’s your car, madam.
Send the bill to my husband.
If you’re a sailor, Michael, there’s a job for you.
Would you like to work for me?
I-d like it.
I’m shipping out tomorrow.
So are we. To the West Coast, by way of the Canal.
We’re short a man on the crew.
I’ll make it worth your while.
Could it be this you’re looking for?
You were smart to carry a gun, travelling alone in the park, but…
if you knew you had the gun in your bag…
why throw away the bag?
I meant for you to find it.
I don’t know how to shoot.
It’s easy. You just pull the trigger.
Some dame, aingt she?
Yeah, and some car.
Evening, Mr. Grisby.
Mr. Bannister sent it all the way from San Francisco…
just so she could have it here.
– Bannister? – Arthur Bannister himself.
Some guys have all the luck.
Personally, I don’t like a girlfriend to have a husband.
If she’ll fool her husband, I figure she’ll fool me.
Now, New York is not as big a city as it pretends to be…
so I spent the next day in the hiring hall,
waiting for a ship.
That way, big boob that I am, I thought I could escape her.
Don’t eat that cigarette. It’ll stunt your growth. Come here.
Excuse me.
I wonder if you could help me locate a Mr. O’Hara.
– Michael O’Hara – Michael O’Hara.
You mean, Black Irish, the big harp that talks fancy?
– I don’t know him myself… – Black Irish?
Yeah, I know him.
Joe. Call Mike O’Hara. A guy here wants to see him.
Michael O’Hara!
Please step to the bulletin board. A man wants to see you.
– Shipmates? – We was in Spain together.
They called him Black Irish after what he did…
to them finks back in ’39.
Mike’s got a lot of blarney in him…
but he knows how to hurt a man when he gets mad.
You were asking for me?
– O’Hara? – O’Hara.
You’re what they call an able-bodied seaman?
Well, that’s what they call it.
– You ever work on a yacht? – No.

Where’s Bailey?
Deaf and dumb, eh?
Can you read lips?
Where is Bailey?
Coming back today?
说啊
Come on.
-Hello, Marny. -Well, look who is back.
-Did you dye your hair? -Why?
I keep thinking of you as a blond.
For all the thinking you do about me, I could be bald-headed.
Ham on rye. Did you miss me, honey?
If I didn’t, I can’t think of anybody else who did.
-One thing’s sure, Bailey don’t miss nothing. -Neither do you.
She’s your girl, and he ain’t my man.
So it’s no skin off my nose. I just see what I see.
You sure you don’t see what you hear?
Nothing can happen in this town that I don’t hear about it across this counter.
I’m just saying what I see. Every day they go fishing together.
Look, the sandwich.
Two things I can smell inside 100 feet:
burning hamburger and a romance.
You got a customer.
-What’ll you have? -Coffee.
-Nothing else? -Cream.
-Where you been this time? -L.A.
-Coffee? -No, thanks.
First she’s got you, now she’s got you and Bailey.
And the only thing I seem to get is older.
Thanks a lot, Marny. I’ll see you later.
Hmm. I guess I must have said something.
You talked enough.
Things like everything people ought to know they just don’t want to hear.
I guess that’s the big trouble with the world.
Either that or you’re on the wrong side of the counter.
-Tell me something. -You don’t look as though I could.
That, uh, Bailey who burns you up, he run the gas station?
-Do you know him? -I might have once.
If he keeps mooning around Jim’s girl, nobody’ll know him…
and that’d be too bad.
You, uh, see much of this Bailey?
Yeah, every day from here.
I often wondered what happened to him…
then one day I’m breezing through here,
and there’s his name up on a sign.
-It’s a small world. -Yeah, or a big sign.
-They’re just not feeding today. -They will later. It’s clouding up.
They say the day you die, your name is written on a cloud.
-Who says? -They.
Never heard of them.
Nothing in that one but rain. Think we ought to go home?
应该
Yes.
-Do you want to? -No.
Every time I look at the sky, I think of all the places I’ve never been.
Yes, and every time you look up, they’re all the same.
-You’ve been a lot of places, haven’t you? -One too many.
-Which did you like best? -This one right here.
-I bet you say that to all the places. -You see that cove over there?
I’d like to build a house right there…
marry you, live in it and never go anywhere else.
I wish you would.
You were never married before, were you?
Not that I can remember.
真好
That’s good.
You’d be amazed the way people talk about you.
The mysterious Jeff Bailey.
My mother tells me that I’ve only known you for such a short time.
And where’d you come from? And what did you do?
我爸
My father was…
-We’d better go. -Is something the matter?
Maybe not.
来
Here.
You sure are a secret man.
Thanks.
Oh, a man just wants to see me.
哦
Oh.
A long time.
Hello, Joe. I wish it was nicer to see you.
Everyone sure missed you, Jeff, but not as much as I have.
-How’s that? -Whit used to look at me shake his head,
and wish I had brains like you.
-What’s the other reason? -I had to find you.
-I owe you something? -Not me.
Who?
-How far can that kid read lips? -I don’t know. I’ll ask him some time.
This far?
-You don’t like to make mistakes, do you? -They don’t let me have many.
All right, come on inside.
Funny racket to find you in, Jeff.
Oh. Yeah, me and the kid laugh all the time.
Heh. I guess that’s because it’s respectable.
That hash slinger across the street says you are too.
How did you happen to find me, Joe?
I was driving down the road one day…
and who do I see pumping gasoline but my old chum from the old times.
Of course, there’s a different name on the sign.
-So you just dropped in? -Why not?
Okay, then I’m glad to see an old pal too.
So I take you to dinner, buy you drinks, it gets late chewing the fat…
you hop in your car and you’re gone. Right?
-Almost. -What else?
I’m still working for that guy, Jeff.
-Whit? -He’d like to see you.
-As much as you did? -Heh.
-Worse. -I see.
No one ever thought more of you than Whit.
Or more about me.
Well, that could be too.
All right, what’s he want, Joe?
Maybe he’s got something nice for you.
-Try once more. -Heh.
Look, Whit never steered you into anything bad, did he?
Why, he never even squawked when you blew the best thing he ever gave you.
-Go on. -The guy just wants to see you.
Well, you put it that way, what can I do?
You know of any other way to put it?
-Say tomorrow morning? -Where?
Lake Tahoe. Turn right at Emerald Bay.
Big house on a hill. You won’t miss it.
You can’t.
Ann? John, are you letting her out like this?
Are you gonna stand for it, with a man who won’t even come to the door?
Don’t worry about them.
-Darling. -It’s no good, is it?
-It doesn’t matter. It’s just that they… -Oh, honey, I know how they feel.
-Don’t worry about it. -I’m not.
-Then don’t look so grim. -No, it’s something else.
-What? -That guy that showed up today…
Yes?

1930’s China. The village of a poor family is taken over by the occupying Japanese army. One son, Zhongliang, leaves his wife and young son to join a medic group for the Chinese Army. The other son, Zhangmin goes into hiding to protect his family.

Michael O’Hara: Maybe I’ll live so long that I’ll forget her. Maybe I’ll die trying.

（All’s Well That Ends Welles）。”
