Yes, I know the feeling.
Guess what this is.
Port. – Worse than that.
Cigars. – Well, why not? My husband does.
He can afford it. – I’m not so sure.
He has a very extravagant wife. – Nonsense.
It’s quite true. I can’t help it.
I’m afraid I do like nice things.
Things far beyond my means sometimes.
Oh, pretty clothes…
Oh, I think the village knows you’re a very understanding person.
That’s why you do so much good. – Well, I hope I do.
I hope I can when they need me.
What a wonderful description.
Sit down, Simpson. And don’t sniff!
I spent the whole afternoon
being pushed around by middle class females…
…buying things they can’t afford.
Miniver. – Oh, yes. The lawyer’s wife.
No, my husband’s an architect.
I knew he was something of that sort.
I don’t know what the country’s coming to.
Trying to be better than their betters.
No wonder Germany’s arming.
Well, goodbye, then. – Goodbye.
Thank you.
I was looking for you on the 5:00.
I missed it by two minutes.
lsn’t that shameful? – Well, time and tide waits for no man.
And trains neither.
Are you too late, ma’am, to spare me a moment?
I got something to show you. – Well, I…
It’s something very special.
Well, of course, Mr. Ballard. Do show me.
This way, ma’am.
Thank you.
Oh, Mr. Ballard.
It’s my masterpiece.
How lovely.
You like it, ma’am?
I think it’s the most beautiful rose I’ve ever seen.
The shape. – And the scent.
Divine. And the color….
I adore red roses.
‘Tis said, as Cupid danced among the gods,
he down the nectar flung…
…which on the white rose being shed,
made it forever after red.
Wherever did you find that?
Hutter’s seed catalog, ma’am.
It’s pretty, but it ain’t true.
What goes to make a rose, ma’am, is breeding…
…and budding and horse manure, if you’ll pardon the expression.
And that’s where you come in, ma’am. – I?
I gotta have a name for it.
Oh, you want me to name it for you.
No, ma’am, I got a name for it…
…if you’ll give me your permission.
Why, of course. But I don’t see…
I want to call it the “Mrs. Miniver.”
If you’ll pardon me, ma’am…
…I’ve watched you go in and out of town for years now…
…and you’ve always had time to stop and have a word with me…
…and I’ve always waited for you to come home…
…and you remind me of the flower.
And I figured it’d be a very good name for my rose.
It’s a lovely compliment, Mr. Ballard.
I’d be very happy indeed to have you name your rose after me.
哦…
Well….
I really must go now. I’m terribly late already.
Goodbye, Mr. Ballard…
…and thank you. Thank you very much.
No, no, no, thank you.
I think it’s lovely having flowers named after you.
Goodbye. – Bye.
Thank you!
That’s my wife.
Good as new? – Well, almost, sir.
It’s a nice car, but afraid it’s a little more than I can afford.
Oh, I’m sorry, sir.
We have some nice cars in a cheaper bracket.
But I like this one.
Well, I’m going to take it.
Perhaps you’d better think it over.
No, I’m going to take it.
Will you bring it tonight? – Very good, sir.

At the moment, life in Warsaw is going on as normally as ever.
But suddenly, something seems to have happened.
Are those Poles seeing a ghost?
Why does this car suddenly stop?
Everybody seems to be staring in one direction.
People seem to be frightened, even terrified.
Some flabbergasted.
Can it be true? It must be true. No doubt.
He seems strangely unconcerned by all the excitement he’s causing.
Is he by any chance interested in Mr. Maslowski’s delicatessen?
That’s impossible! He’s a vegetarian.
And yet, he doesn’t always stick to his diet.
Heil Hitler.
-Heil Hitler! -Colonel, we have Wilhelm Coetze here.
If you’d like to look into his record.
-I hope he’ll talk. -He’d better.
-Send him in. -Yes, sir.
Wilhelm Coetze!
Heil Hitler!
And now, Wilhelm, I understand you want a little tank to play with.
Yes, my father promised me one
if I got a good report card.
But our Fuhrer heard
about your report card…
and decided to give you just what you want.
Heil Hitler!
You are going to tell your father
who gave it to you, aren’t you, Wilhelm?
Sure, our Fuhrer.
And then maybe he will
like the Fuhrer a little better, won’t he?
当然
Sure.
He doesn’t like him now, does he?
No, he doesn’t.
And sometimes he even says funny things about him, doesn’t he?
Well, he said they named a brandy after Napoleon…
and they made a herring out of Bismarck.
-Yes. -Yeah.
-How did you know? -Well, it’s a natural thought.
A natural thought?
I hope you don’t misunderstand. I always, that is…
You see, Colonel, I hope you don’t doubt my…
Heil Hitler!
The Fuhrer.
我自己
Heil Hitler!
万岁
Heil myself.
That’s not in the script.
But, Mr. Dobosh, please.
That’s not in the script, Mr. Bronski.
-But it’ll get a laugh. -I don’t want a laugh here.
How many times have I told you not to add any lines?
我想…
I want…
You want my opinion, Mr. Dobosh?
No, I don’t want your opinion.
All right, then let me give you my reaction.
A laugh is nothing to be sneezed at.
Mr. Greenberg,
I hired you as an actor, not as a writer.
Understand?
What does the script say?
-I make an entrance. -And what do you say?
-Nothing. -Then say nothing.
Here am I sitting, waiting for my scene, all eager to go…
and I have to wait and wait to be driven out of my mood…
just because two little actors in the cast
want to enlarge their parts.
Mr. Rawitch, what you are, I wouldn’t eat.
How dare you call me a ham!
Folks, I want everybody to understand this.
This is a serious play, a realistic drama…
-Good morning, Dobosh. -Good morning.
-How do you like my dress? -Very good.
It is a document of Nazi…
Is that what you’re wearing in the concentration camp?
-Don’t you think it’s pretty? -That’s it.
Well, why not? I think it’s a tremendous contrast.
Think of me being flogged in the darkness.
I scream, the lights go on…
and the audience sees me on the floor in this gorgeous dress.
-That’s a terrific laugh. -That’s right, Greenberg.
别说了
You keep out of this!
That a great star, an artist, could be so inartistic.
You must be out of your mind.
What do you mean by talking to my wife like that? How dare you!
I’m sorry. I lost my temper.
Sweetheart, the dress stinks.
You’re only afraid I’m running away with the scene.
I afraid? Why should I be?
Of course not. You’re the best actor in the world.
-Everybody knows that, even you. -Don’t be a prima donna.
Any chance to take the spotlight away from me,
it’s ridiculous how you grab it.
Whenever I start a story, you finish it.
If I go on a diet, you lose the weight.
If I have a cold, you cough.
If we should ever have a baby,
I’m not so sure I’d be the mother.
I’m satisfied to be the father.
Mr. Dobosh, look,
if you’ll just give me a chance…
-Who made you up? -I did, Mr. Dobosh.
-What’s wrong with it? -I don’t know. It’s not convincing.
To me, he’s just a man with a little mustache.
But so was Hitler.
Wait, it’s not just the mustache. It’s… I don’t know.
I just can’t smell Hitler in him.
我能
I can.
我知道
I know.
That picture. That’s what he should look like.
But that picture was taken of me.
Then the picture’s wrong, too.
Now, see here, Mr. Dobosh,
I’m a nobody and I have to take a lot.
But I know I look like Hitler,
and I’m going to prove it right now.
I’m going out on the street and see what happens.

With the coming of the Second World War…
…many eyes in imprisoned Europe turned hopefully, or desperately…
…toward the freedom of the Americas.
Lisbon became the great embarkation point.
But not everybody could get to Lisbon directly.
And so a torturous, roundabout refugee trail sprang up.
Paris to Marseilles…
…across the Mediterranean to Oran.
Then, by train or auto or foot, across the rim of Africa…
…to Casablanca in French Morocco.
Here, the fortunate ones, through money or influence or luck…
…might obtain exit visas and scurry to Lisbon.
And from Lisbon to the New World.
But the others wait in Casablanca.
And wait and wait and wait.
To all officers:
Two German couriers carrying official documents murdered on train from Oran.
Murderer and possible accomplices headed for Casablanca.
Round up all suspicious characters and search them for stolen document.
Important.
May we see your papers?
I don’t think I have them on me.
-In that case, you’ll have to come along. -Wait. It’s possible that I…
在这里
Yes. Here they are.
These papers expired three weeks ago. You’ll have to come along.
站住
Halt!
站住
Halt!
-What on earth is going on there? -I don’t know, my dear.
Pardon, monsieur. Pardon, madame. Have you not heard?
We hear very little, and we understand even less.
Two German couriers were found murdered in the desert. The unoccupied desert.
This is the customary roundup of refugees, liberals…
…and, of course, a beautiful young girl for Renault, the prefect of police.
Along with these unhappy refugees, the scum of Europe has gravitated to Casablanca.
Some of them have been waiting years for a visa.
I beg of you, monsieur, watch yourself. Be on guard.
This place is full of vultures.
Vultures everywhere. Everywhere!
-Thank you. Thank you very much. -Not at all.
What an amusing little fellow.
侍者
Waiter.
-Oh, how silly of me. -What, dear?
I’ve left my wallet in the hotel.
Perhaps tomorrow we’ll be on the plane.
It is good to see you again, Major Strasser.
Thank you, thank you.
May I present Captain Renault, police prefect of Casablanca. Major Strasser.
Unoccupied France welcomes you to Casablanca.
Thank you, captain. It’s good to be here.
Major Strasser, my aide, Lieutenant Casselle.
Captain Tonnelli. The Italian service at your command.
That is kind of you.
You may find the climate of Casablanca a trifle warm.
We Germans must get used to all climates, from Russia to the Sahara.
-Perhaps you werert referring to weather. -What else?
The murder of the couriers. What has been done?
My men are rounding up twice the usual number of suspects.
-But we know already who the murderer is. -Good. Is he in custody?
No hurry. Tonight he’ll be at Rick’s. Everybody comes to Rick’s.
I’ve already heard about this cafe. And also about Mr. Rick himself.
Waiting, waiting, waiting.
I’ll never get out of here.
I’ll die in Casablanca.
But can’t you make it just a little more?
求求你
Please?
Sorry, but diamonds are a drug on the market. Everybody sells diamonds.
There are diamonds everywhere. 2400.
好吧
All right.
The trucks are waiting. The men are waiting. Everything…
It’s the fishing smack Santiago.
It leaves at 1 tomorrow night, here from the end of La Medina. Third boat.
-Thank you. Thank you. -And bring 15,000 francs in cash.
Remember, in cash.
干杯
Cheerio.
-Open up, Abdul. -Yes, professor.
-Waiter? -Yes, madame?
Will you ask Rick if he’ll have a drink with us?
Madame, he never drinks with customers. Never. I have never seen it.
What makes saloonkeepers so snobbish?
Perhaps if you told him I ran the second-largest banking house in Amsterdam.
Second largest? That wouldn’t impress Rick.
The leading banker in Amsterdam is now the pastry chef in our kitchen.
We have something to look forward to.
And his father is the bellboy.
对不起
Excuse me.
I’m sorry, sir. This is a private room.
Of all the nerve. Who do you think…? I know there is gambling in there.
-You dare not keep me out. -Yes? What’s the trouble?
I have been in every gambling room between Honolulu and Berlin.
And if you think I’m going to be kept out of a saloon like this, you’re much mistaken.
Excuse me, please. Hello, Rick.
Your cash is good at the bar.
What? Do you know who I am?
I do. You’re lucky the bar is open to you.
This is outrageous! I shall report it to The Angriff.
You know, watching you just now, one would hink you’ve been doing this all your life.
-What makes you think I haven’t? -Nothing.
-But when you first came, I thought… -You thought what?
What right do I have to think?
May I?
They got a lucky break. Yesterday they were just clerks…
…today they are the honored dead.
You are a very cynical person, Rick, if you’ll forgive me for saying so.
I forgive you.
-Will you have a drink with me? -No.
I forgot, you never drink with…I’ll have another, please.
You despise me, don’t you?
If I gave you any thought, I probably would.
But why?
Do you object to the kind of business I do?
But think of all those poor refugees who must rot in this place if I didn’t help them.
That’s not so bad. Through ways of my own, I provide them with exit visas.
For a price, Ugarte. For a price.
But think of all the poor devils who can’t meet Renault’s price.
I get it for them for half. Is that so parasitic?
I don’t mind a parasite. I object to a cut-rate one.
Well, after tonight I will be through with the whole business.
And I’m leaving, finally, this Casablanca.
Who did you bribe for your visa? Renault or yourself?
Myself. I found myself much more reasonable.
Look, Rick.
Know what this is?
Something that even you have never seen.
Letters of transit signed by General de Gaulle.
Cannot be rescinded. Not even questioned.
等一下
One moment.

Our story takes you down this shadowed path…
to a remote and guarded building in the English Midlands:
Melbridge County Asylum.
Grimly proud of its new military wing…
which barely suffices…
in this autumn of 1918…
to house the shattered minds…
of the war that was to end war.
Now, Mr. And Mrs. Lloyd…
I should warn you that even if he is your son…
he may not recognize you.
His memory is affected, and he has trouble with his speech:
The result of shock.
He was picked up by the Germans…
in a shell hole near Arras in 1917…
close to death and with no means of identification.
he could remember nothing at all of his past life.
He had no name…
he had no family with whom he could correspond.
Six months ago, he was exchanged through Switzerland and sent here.
I sincerely hope he proves to be your son.
I believe that he could be cured…
with patience and care in normal surroundings.
May we see him now?
Certainly.
Please, Mrs. Lloyd, don’t hope too much.
I’ve seen many disappointments.
Good morning, boys. This is just an informal visit.
Good morning, Clayton.
Sleeping better? You just keep it up.
Well, now, Trempitt, what’s going on?
I thought you and I were friends. Last time we shook hands.
Don’t you remember?
Well, don’t bother today if you don’t feel like it.
You can’t discourage me.
There. You see, my boy? That’s the spirit.
You and I will be going into town very soon for a glass of beer…
to Melbridge Arms.
Would you like that?
Fine. Won’t be long now.
Well, Smith…
you are looking better, really improved.
– Don’t you think so, Doctor? – Very much.
We have some news for you. Interested?
There are some people here who are very anxious to see you.
Mr. And Mrs. Lloyd.
Lloyd?
The name mean anything to you?
Their son was reported missing in 1917.
At Arras.
Now don’t pin your hopes on it.
You may be their son, you may not.
We’ll soon know.
My parents.
There. You see, my boy? You speak well enough when you want to.
It’s just a matter of confidence.
You’ve just got to get back your confidence.
My father.
Doctor, dress him up a bit and take him to the reception room.
Very well. Come along, Smith.
Lloyd.
Sit down, old man.
If they are your parents…
They would take me out of here?
That’s rather a big if, old man. Sit down.
Lloyd.
– He is not your son, then? – No.
I’m sincerely sorry.
I told you, my boy, not to count on it.
Out in this weather, Major? You are a one for a walk, ain’t you?
Proper old pea soup this is.

Real life screened more daringly than it’s ever been before!

George: I said, automobiles are a useless nuisance. Never amount to anything but a nuisance. They had no business to be invented.

Smithy: [Rainier proposed to Ms. Hanson] You and I are in the same boat, Miss Hanson; we’re both ghost-ridden. We are prisoners of our past. What if we were to pool our loneliness, and give each other what little we have to give support, friendship? I’m proposing marriage, Miss Hanson, or should I call it a merger? A Member of Parliament should have a wife, Margaret; so I’m told on all sides. He needs a clever hostess; you have exceptional gifts. Would it interest you to have a wider field for them? You need have no fear that I would make any emotional demands upon you. I have only sincere friendship to offer. I won’t ask any more from you.
