In 1978, I came to Europe for the first […]

In 1978, I came to Europe for the first time
to compete outside Brazil,
in the World Championship.
It was pure driving, pure racing.
There wasn’t any politics.
No money involved either. It was real racing.
We did not think that karting
could become a career.
But it is becoming significant proportions
and we are a bit worried
probably because finish in Formula One.
May God protect him from harm.
The dangers are my biggest fear.
I would like to thank because it is a good son
and this year he worked well and honestly.
For me, it is more important than any title.
Few people really do know myself.
They just don’t understand
what it takes from a racing driver,
somebody that has left behind
thousands of miles away, family and friends
to live in Europe.
Being so young and always in a fighting mode.
Nothing ever has come easy.
The time has come.
Ayrton is ready to ride for the first time a Formula One car.
I believe it was God to give me this opportunity.
I’ve been waiting a long time.
And now it is also helping to remain calm, tranquil, relaxed.
Ayrton, this is a beautiful city,
with wonderful streets to walk,
but unsuitable to host a race, no?
Indeed. I arrived at the last minute
and I was surprised. I’ve never been to Monaco.
I did some test drive.
And fortunately, I managed to adapt to the path.
There is no margin for error:
any error would result in an accident.
But for now, I’m satisfied.
I traveled a lot, by the chronicler of Formula One
when Ayrton began to be noticed aboard a Toleman.
The Toleman was not a winning team.
The car was bad
and never won a race.
That’s why what Ayrton did in Monaco was true genius.
Alain Prost, who started well,
has got away in the lead.
Nigel Mansell, the two Ferraris third and forth.
Niki Lauda is in fifth position.
Sixth is Rosberg.
Seventh, Manfred Winkelhock.
Eighth, Ayrton Senna.
But Senna has come up throught the field.
He started in thirteenth place and is now seventh.
Nigel Mansell loses control!
Ayrton Senna has now passed Keke Rosberg and is in third place.
It also outperforms Niki Lauda!
Ayrton Senna earns second place
the most dangerous part of the track!
But I think we are watching the arrival of Ayrton Senna,
a truly outstanding talent.
He is catching Alain Prost something like three seconds per lap.
1’54.334″
103,97 km/h = 6♥4♥.60 mph
and that is a pretty staggering performance.
Prost is waving his hand to the officials.
He wants to stop the race.
Who can blame him?
In fact, from a purist and dispassionate point of view,
there is no reason to stop the race.
There is an official in front of me with a red flag.
They want to stop running.
and the checkered flag is going out.
Incredible!
Prost is stopping and Senna cross the finish line before him.
Ayrton raises his arms and gesturing with enthusiasm!
Celebrated as if he won the race!
If he had a few more laps,
would certainly come into his head.
I had a serious chance of winning.
But until he crossed the finish line in first position,
you do not know.
Formula One is politics, money
and when you are not yet important,
must also deal with such things.
A tragic result for Senna. However,
if not the world champion this year,
He undoubtedly will be the world champion in the future,
if his career will continue.
Ayrton Senna the new star of Formula One!
Rooms for the first time on the podium
in Formula One after a great race.
What about next year?
Will you stay with the Toleman team?
What are your plans for now? – I do not know.
It is still no decision,
and nothing clear.
We will have to wait more time to see what happens.
You will not be satisfied
until you are in a winning position, are you?
I believe if your are doing something like competing like motor racing,
you either do well or forget it.
Lotus was a perfect team for Ayrton to move to.
It was a team that had won Championships and won many Grand Prix
and they worked very very hard around Ayrton to give his talent
and all the facilities he needed to win.
When I came to Formula One in ’84,
I was starting.
So I had so much learn and achieve that
anything, any good result was a progress
was a motivation.
Then I changed to a bigger team, to Lotus,
and I still went up and up and up.
and I’m still doing it.
So even when I have some problems,
I look always to the next race.
Because maybe one race I have no chance,
but the next one or the next five will be good.
against one bad one.

Goyas Ghosts 2006
And these are actually for sale in the bookshops?
And in the streets as well, Father.
And in Toledo?
In Toledo. In Salamanca, Sevilla.
And in the Port of Cdiz.
So these prints are sent abroad?
These are sold in Rome. Even as far as Mexico.
This is how the world sees us.
This, this is how the world is seeing us.
What is the name of the artist?
Francisco Goya.
Isn’t he the man you commissioned to paint your portrait?
He is, Father.
Why did you choose him?
In all humility, Father, I chose him for the same reason our King and the Queen
have appointed him to be the Court painter.
They consider him the greatest painter in Spain.
These prints are quite disturbing, I must say.
Disturbing?
Yes, yes, of course they are.
But, Father, these prints
show us the true face of our world.
Maybe your world, Brother Lorenzo.
How can you call these hideous images
“the true face of our world”?
There is but one world, Brother,
and it is neither yours, nor mine. It is the Lord’s.
Have you lost your sight, Brother?
Do you not see what demonic filth and degradation this Goya is selling?
He’s an agent of the darkest powers!
Granted that he’s decorated chapels.
He’s painted angels, yes,
but when your mother raises her eyes to pray to God
whom do you think she sees?
Whom do you think Goya is using as models for his angels?
Harlots!
Those are whores smiling down at your mother from the ceiling!
I assert before all of you
that Goya is a valuable member of the Church.
How so?
Father, I have met women
who cannot recite a single prayer.
It’s them …We have to seek them out,
but what is our response?
Or do you think, by burning Goya’s canvases
the evil this artist has depicted will go up in flames?
Why don’t we look at ourselves?
What have we accomplished in the last 50 years?
How many heretics have we sent to the stake?
I will tell you exactly how many, Father. Eight. Eight burned at the stake.
Are you proposing we show greater severity?
Yes, Father, yes. We have to return to the old ways.
I’m talking about the God-fearing ways of the past.
Are you prepared to join this battle?
Never mind join,
grant me the wisdom to lead it, Father.
Why doesn’t that painting have a face?
Because he’s a ghost.
No, he is not!
Have you ever seen a ghost?
No. But I have seen a witch.
Oh, did you?
Yes, but she had a face.
What did she look like?
She was all bent and creepy, and she stank… Phew!
That’s interesting. Because the witch that I know
she’s young, very lovely, and she smells of jasmine.
She does? – She does.
And I’m working on her portrait right now.
I’m no witch!
How do you know?
Am I allowed to say something?
Please. – I know that face.
She would not be one of your angels in the Florida chapel, would she?
Yes, she is. You’re dangerously perceptive.
This is probably a very naive but I am a man of the cloth.
Do you…?
Do you painters not become very intimate with your models?
It must be very tempting…
when you spend hours and hours alone with, not only beautiful,
but young girl.
Would you like me to include your hands in the portrait?
I’ll leave that up to you.
No, it’s up to you to decide.
Hands are not easy to paint and not everybody will spend the extra money.
Well, what is the difference?
One hand, two thousand reales. Two hands, three thousand.
Why did you agree to paint my portrait?
Why not?
You have the reputation of mocking the men of cloth in your work.
And harshly, I must say.
Do I?
Are you aware of how many powerful enemies you have, Goya?
Fortunately, I also have a few very powerful friends.
出去！
go out! pull out.
How have you been, dear Goya?
As always, Your Majesty
So don’t complain.
I endeavor not to, Your Majesty.
Is this the wild steed that I am to conquer today?
Oh, dear!
So how do you want me to ride?
How do you want history to perceive you, madam?
The way I am, young and beautiful.
Which one do you wish for supper, my dear?
我看…
Maybe…
the vulture.
May I stay and watch you work for a while?
Why, if I may have any say in the matter, Your Majesty,
I’d prefer no-one see the work before it’s finished.
Am I intruding?
Yes, you are, my dear.
Oh, I see.
As you wish, as you will,
whatever is your pleasure.
How long do I have to sit up here?
For as long as I may need you there, Your Majesty.
See what I am carrying?
I must be a pious man, right?
But look at what is really inside this.
Voltaire! Voltaire!
The Dark Prince of the darkest principles!
Devious. Devious.
Be vigilant, use your ears. People talk.
You might hear somebody claiming that matter
consists of very small elements, called atoms.
Get his name. He’s a heretic

Hello. Hello.
Hello, I am the ghost of Daniel Johnston.
Many years ago I lived in Austin, Texas,
and I worked at McDonald’s.
It is an honor and a privilege
to speak to you today,
to tell you about my condition,
and the other world.
MALE ANNOUNCER: Ladies and gentlemen.
The best singer/songwriter alive today,
Daniel Johnston
Daniel，
MAN: We love you, Daniel!
Silly Love-Daniel Johnston
(SINGING) I’ve come this far and I know I can make it
I’ve got a broken heart and you can’t break a broken heart
I come knocking at your door
You don’t love me anymore
But I just can’t give up
‘Cause I don’t know what to do about it
You must be wrong if you think you don’t love me
You could smile down and put a happy ending to my song
I come knocking at your door
You don’t live there anymore
Is it just a memory?
Or am I a little crazy for you?
MABEL JOHNSTON: He was different.
I noticed that from the start that Dan was different.
I had him on a crib in our little bedroom
and I would go in and talk to him, change his diaper,
and I would squeal at him and he would squeal back at me.
That’s a small baby communicating, I thought
Being, uh, six years younger than his four brothers and sisters,
he was pampered by them.
And, uh, they nursed him along.
But we didn’t notice at that time
that there was any special talents involved or anything.
MABEL: When he went to school, they tested the kids,
Daniel
and Dan was put in the highest group of the highest class.
His teacher was really mad at him and it’s understandable
because Dan doesn’t follow directions.
You know, when he was in junior high,
he suddenly lost all his wonderful confidence,
and I guess it was the beginning of his illness.
BILL: He and his brother decided to make their own movie.
And it was a collaborative effort between the two brothers working together.
And Dan had to change clothes and pretend to be his mother.
Because his mother and I weren’t in the movie actually.
Mabel，
Tell about it, Mabel.
Daniel
MABEL: Dan is the director and the actor
portraying himself in parts
and his horrible mother in other parts.
Bill
I think he was having fun teasing me. What do you think, Bill?
BILL: Yeah, he… He was doing it for humor.
DANIEL: You are real lazy. Wake up.
MABEL”. Dan’s hard to deal with sometimes.
He thought, “I’m artistic. I shouldn’t have to do those things.”
Time to get up and get ready for school.
DANIEL: Get up in there, breakfast is ready.
MABEL: He wanted to be comic all the time. He just couldn’t get over it.
好
DANIEL: Okay.
MABEL: They were having too good a time.
I don’t think his relationship with me was typical.
Do you suppose he really pictured me that way?
This is ridiculous, what they’re showing.
I think it’s popcorn and green Kool-Aid.
He was a trial.
I was sort of the star art guy at the high school.
Oak Glen高中
– Oak Glen High School.
And I started hearing rumors of this new art guy, the new art star.
You know, the new kid in town, I had to find out who this was.
Dan Johnston
A friend of mine told me, “There’s this kid, Dan Johnston,
“he can really draw, he’s a musician or something.”
So he kind of had one up on me, he was a musician.
The guy is a natural, an absolute natural.
He never even had to learn to draw.
He just got better from great.
You know, I had to hang outwith this guy. I had to be around this art.
So we just started hanging out and doing art together, actually.
The eyeball thing was sort of like his intro calling card.
DANIEL: Did it touch you emotionally?
DAVID: It was his mysterious entry.
GIRL: It’s definitely different.
GIRL 2: I’m speechless.
DAVID: Everybody was, “Who’s the eyeball guy?”
You know, he was painting these eyeballs everywhere.
He would actually draw on walls all over the high school.
GIRL 3: I thought Dan’s was very imaginative.
DAVID: Daniel, he just exudes an’.
He can’t stop making art.
He never sits and thinks, “What am I gonna do?”
He just grabs something.
Story Of An Artist-Daniel Johnston
Listen up and I’ll tell a story
About an artist growing old
Some would try for fame and glory
Others aren’t so bold
Everyone, and friends and family
saying, “Hey! Get a job!”
“Why do you only do that only?
“Why are you so odd?
“We don’t really like what you do
“We don’t think anyone ever will
“It’s a problem that you have
“And this problem’s made you ill”
The artist walks alone
Someone says behind his back
“He’s got his gall to call himself that!
“He doesn’t even know where he’s at!”
BILL: He wasn’t buying them for comic books,
he was buying them for the artwork that was involved on the comics.
And some of the artists were his incentive
to try to be an artist himself.
They were an inspiration to him.
DAVID: Now talk about the cinema of Daniel Johnston, then.
He doesn’t have influences.
He doesn’t sit down and consciously watch Chaplin
and then learn, or this is my Keaton period.
It’s not like that. He doesn’t even know who these guys are.
You know, he gets a Super 8 and he makes a movie.
Dan took himself seriously.
He, for some reason, thought he was going to be
an artist because probably of the attention he got.
The family room would sometimes be almost full of kids
and one of them told me that he’s going to be famous someday.
And I thought, “That silly stuff,” you know?
DAVID: He lived in the basement of his parents’ house.
They got this perfectly normal ranch house out in the country behind New Cumberland.
Daniel
He’s got this amazing lab,
like this amazing factory downstairs.
He’s turned a garage and two sort of utility rooms
into a bedroom and an art factory,
and he’s just got everywhere, magazines, tapes.
In fact, he’s recreated it in Waller, where he lives today.
It’s a duplicate of the same room.
Daniel Johnston
I was guilt stricken
to go away
She turned without saying
I could not stay
And all the while
she was smiling at me
Like I was a show on her TV
They’re sort of like this
Christian fundamentalist Glass Family.
They’re creative, they’re intellectual,
but there’s this, like, West Virginia, kind of right-wing Christian thing.
Danie
Daniel wasn’t having any of it.
Spiritually he was separated from them,

Our superheroes are the kind of people that you or I would be
which sets them apart from all other superheroes published today
and seems to be the reason that they’re actually far more popular than any others.
Every one of us are a product of all the things we’ve experienced,
seen, read, and heard in our lives.
So, when I write, I’m remembering things that happened.
Those things become part of the story.
December 28th was a very important date for me in the year 1922.
They didn’t have a camera, but there were people in the neighborhood.
I think you’d pay them a dime at that time.
They would have a little pony with them, and they put the little kid on the pony.
So, I had more photos of myself taken on ponies.
I did have a brother who was born nine years after me.
His name is Larry and he’s a great guy,
but unfortunately, I was nine years older,
so it was tough to pal around with him.
I loved reading.
I think I was born reading,
I mean, I can’t remember a time when I wasn’t reading.
I loved Sherlock Holmes, Tarzan, The Hardy Boys,
King Arthur and his Knights, The Odyssey, everything I could get my hands on.
My mother said I would read the labels on ketchup bottles
if there was nothing else around.
We didn’t have any money. It was during the Depression.
The one thing I wanted was a bicycle.
And finally, my folks scraped up enough money
and they bought me this two-wheeler.
And, man, I felt as though I could go anywhere on that bike.
I had been freed.
I used to go to the movies and I’d see Errol Flynn on the screen.
He played Robin Hood, Captain Blood.
He was always a hero.
I wanted to be Errol Flynn.
And I would leave the theater
and ride my bike over the George Washington Bridge,
which goes from Manhattan to New Jersey.
And it was such a triumphant feeling to ride across the bridge.
And I knew I was gonna become somebody important.
Again, we bring you another chapter of Edgar Rice Burroughs’ amazing history
of Tarzan of the Apes.
The astounding record of a superman who became the…
My father was a great guy, but he had trouble getting a job.
He had been a dress cutter,
and there were just no jobs apparently for dress cutters.
And so, he was unemployed most of the time.
My earliest memories are just him sitting home,
reading the want ads in the newspaper.
I always felt tremendous pity for him.
It must be a terrible feeling to just not be bringing in the money
that’s needed for your family.
To me, it seemed as if having a good job, a steady job,
was the greatest success a person could attain,
only because my father never had one.
That’s one of the reasons I started working at an early age.
I got a job as an office boy,
at the second largest trouser manufacturer.
They had millions of salesmen, and whenever they wanted a glass of water,
or they wanted someone to sharpen a pencil,
they would yell, “Boy!”
and whichever one of us was closer had to come running,
and I resented the fact
that they never took the trouble to learn my name.
Like, a week before Christmas, they told me I have to leave
and, oh, I was burned up.
But if they hadn’t fired me, I might have stayed there
and I might have made my life working in trousers. I was lucky.
There was a general rush. Bank deposits…
And Owens wins again…
人类…
Oh, the humanity…
Writing was always fun. In fact, I remember I was a very corny guy.
I had a little briefcase and I loved carrying it with me
when I walked in the streets so people would think I was a writer.
You know, a little thin briefcase.
When I graduated high school, I had an uncle
and he worked for a publisher,
and he told me that they were looking for an assistant.
And I figured, “Gee, I’m going to apply.” So I went up there,
and I found out they also published comic books.
They had an outfit called Timely Comics,
and they hired me to run errands,
to proof-read, fill the inkwell, whatever had to be done.
I didn’t really have any intention to be working in comics,
but it was a job.
There were two guys, Joe Simon and Jack Kirby,
who were running the thing.
Joe Simon was the boss and he walked around puffing a big cigar
and he talked in a very deep voice, and he was great. I liked him.
He had a lot of personality.
And Jack would sit hunched over the drawing board
and do most of the actual artwork.
I asked Stan how old he was. He says, “17.”
The Lord is the everlasting God,
He will not grow tired or weary,
and His understanding no one can fathom.
He gives strength to the weary
and increases the power of the weak.
Even youths grow tired and weary,
and young men stumble and fall.
But those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength.
They will soar on wings like eagles.
They will run and not grow weary.
They will walk and not be faint.
For Pete’s sake.
Hey! Get away from that ledge, you damn fool kids!
You’re going to break your necks!
Hal, can you hear me?
Hal… Come on.
He’s dilated.
Do I have to tell you again?
You move, woman, or I will wallop you good and hard!
He hates himself sometimes.
Your daddy tonight, that ain’t the real him.
I wish you knew him like I did, before the war.
Stay with us, you’re gonna be okay.
You feel pain?
Stay with us, okay?
Army physicals that way. This is for giving blood.
Are you all right?
Oh, no, that’s not mine. I’m fine.
Thank you for asking though, ma’am.

There’s a moment of orderly silence
before a football play begins.
Players are in position, linemen are frozen,
And anything’s possible.
Then, like a traffic accident, staff begins to randomly collide.
From the snap of the ball to the snap of the first bone
Is closer to four seconds than five.
One mississippi.
Joe Theismann, the redskins quarterback
Takes the snap and hands off to his running back.
Two mississippi.
It’s a trick play, a flea flicker,
And the running back tosses the ball back to the quarterback.
Three mississippi.
Up to now the play’s been defined
by the what the quarterback sees.
It’s about to be defined by what he doesn’t.
Four mississippi.
Lawrence Taylor is the best defensive player in the NFL
And has been from the time he stepped onto the field as a rookie.
He will also change the game of football as we know it.
…and we’ll look at it with the reverse angle one more time.
And I suggest if your stomach is weak you just don’t watch …
Legendary quarterback Joe Thiesmann
never played another down of football.
Now, y’all would guess that more often than not
The highest paid player on an NFL team is the quarterback.
And you’d be right.
What you probably don’t know is that more often than not
The second highest paid player is, thanks to Lawrence Taylor,
A left tackle.
Because, as every housewife knows,
The first check you write is for the mortgage
But the second is for the insurence.
And the left tackle’s job is to protect the quarterback
From what he can’t see coming. To protect his blind side.
The ideal left tackle is big, but a lot of people are big.
He is wide in the butt and massive in the thighs.
He has long arms, giant hands and feet as quick as a hiccup.
This is a rare and expensive combination
The need for which can be traced to that monday night game
And Lawrence Taylor.
For on that day he not only altered Joe Theismann’s life,
But mine as well.
Mr. Oher?
Mr. Oher?
Do you understand..? Do you know why I’m here?
To… investigate?
Yes. To investigate.
I’m here to investigate your odd… predicament.
Do you find the odd? Your predicament?
Michael?…
Iono.
Can I… can I leave now?
不行
No. You can’t.
# strange face, with your eyes #
# so pale and sincere #
# underneath, you know well #
# you have nothing to fear #
# for the dreams that came to you #
# when you were young #
你知道
# told of a life where #
# spring has crawled #
# you would seem so frail #
# in the cold of the night #
# when the armies of emotion #
# go out to fight #
# but while the earth #
# sinks to its grave #
# you sail to the sky #
# on the crest of a wave #
They say you the coach.
Bert Cotton.
Tony Hamilton, but everybody just calls me big Tony.
Hey, big Mike! Check it out.
Not even locked!
White people are crazy.
I promises my mama boo, on her deathbed
That I’d get my son Steven outta public school
And into a church school.
I appreciate that, Tony. But I’m not involved with admissions.
This figured maybe I’d come to talk to you,
Seeing as you might need some players.
What kind of sport is he playing?
Anything with a ball. Boy’s good, too.
Classes start in a week.
It would have to be for the next semester.
I know, what you’re thinking, coach. But,
look here, I got money, alright?
See I’m mechanic at wilson’s auto t’other side of town.
Look, what if somebody drops out or moves?
Could they get in then?
“They?” you only mentioned one son.
That’s right, Steven. But there’s another boy.
– Another boy? – Yeah.
Big Mike.
Sleeps on my coach from time to time.
It’s a bad deal. You know, his mama’s on the crack pipe.
He ain’t got nobody else.
He just wanted to come along for the ride.
– They’re here? – Yeah.
The little one is Steven
And the big one…
Big Mike.
空心球
Swish!
迈克
Mike!
Come on!
Mother of god….
Steven Hamilton’s paperwork looks acceptable to me.
And I believe he would do fine.
– but this other kid… – Big Mike.
Michael Oher gives us no reason to believe it,
Based on his record, that he would be successful here.
How bad could it be?
We’re not exactly sure how old he is due to lack of records.
He has a measured iq of 80. Which is 6th percentile.
His grade point average begins with zero.
Zero-point-six.
Everyone passed him along
They gave him d’s so they could hand
their problem off to the next school.
It’s a brave kid.
For wanting to come here.
For wanting a quality education.
An education denied him by the poor
quality of the schools he’s attended.
I tell you most kids with his background
Wouldn’t come within two hundred miles of this place.
Coach Cotton, we understand your interest

Mrs. Kennedy?
They told me to come up.
And I’m so sorry for your loss.
Have you read what they’ve been writing?
Krock and Merriman and all the rest?
Yes, I have.
Merriman is such a bitter man.
It’s been just one week.
Already they’re treating him like some dusty old artifact,
to be shelved away.
That’s no way to be remembered.
And how would you like him remembered, Mrs. Kennedy?
我…
I…
You understand that I will be editing this conversation?
Just in case I don’t say exactly what I mean.
With all due respect,
that seems very unlikely, Mrs. Kennedy.
Right. Okay.
So, this will be your own version of what happened?
没错
Exactly.
Come in.
I thought it was another backfire.
I very nearly didn’t go.
What if I’d been here
or out riding in Virginia somewhere?
Thank God I was with him.
Why, “Thank God”?
Do you know what I think of history?
历史
Of history?
I’ve read a great deal. More than people realize.
The more I read, the more I wonder…
When something is written down,
does that make it true?
It’s all that we have.
Had.
We have television now.
At least people can see for their own eyes.
That tour of the White House
that you did a couple of years ago for CBS,
I always assumed that you did that for
a purpose? No? After the fashion magazines?
You even won an Emmy.
I didn’t do that program for me.
I did it for the American people.
That program was my first glimpse into the White House
and, for whatever it’s worth, I thought you were excellent.
– Very poised. – Oh, thank you.
You could have had a career as a broadcaster, I’m sure.
什么
What?
I’m sorry?
What did you say?
I said you could have a career…
Could have had a career as a broadcaster.
Are you giving me professional advice?
我…
I’m…
没有
not.
But I am sure that the whole country would like to know
what you’re going to do next.
I can assure you, not television.
Welcome to the White House.
Welcome to the White House.
We’re so proud to call it home.
Why don’t you try, “The People’s House”?
Make it more personal.
Welcome to The People’s House.
We’re so proud to call it home.
Better?
When will Jack join us?
They want to hear from you.
They think I’m a fool.
One year in office, wasting their money.
That’s why you need to show them what you’ve done.
The President will join you in the Monroe Room
at the end of the tour.
You’ll be great.
– Stay close. – Of course.
You look beautiful. Go.
Hello. Excuse me.
This is the White House
as seen from its South Lawn.
For the next hour, Mrs. John F. Kennedy
invites you to visit the President’s House
and see some of the restorations she’s made in its interior.
Mrs. John F. Kennedy,
third-youngest of the 29 wives
to live in the White House.
Mrs. Kennedy, I want to thank you
for letting us visit your official home.
This is obviously the room
from which much of your work on it is directed.
Yes, it’s attic and cellar all in one.
Since our work started,
we receive hundreds of letters every day.
This is where we evaluate all the finds,
and see if we want to keep them,
if they’ll fit into our budget.
Mrs. Kennedy, every First Lady
and every administration since President Madison’s time,
has made changes,
greater or smaller, in the White House.
Before we look at any of the changes you’ve made…
Now, what’s your basic plan?
Well, I really don’t have one.
Because I think this house will always grow, and should.
It just seemed to me such a shame
when we came here to find
hardly anything of the past in the house.
Hardly anything before 1902.
Now suppose that you and your committee
were to acquire some of the things that are in this room,
what happens when the next President’s wife
comes into the White House?
Well, if they don’t want it…
In the past, you see,
they could sell it or throw it out.
And the talk of the taxpayer money being wasted?
Oh, I raised every dime privately
that we spent on that restoration.
I… I loved that house,
and I wanted to share it with the American people.
To impart a sense of America’s greatness.
Objects and artifacts last far longer than people,
and they represent important ideas in history,
identity, beauty.
But I’m sure that, uh, the readers would like to know
what it’s like to be a member of your family?
Imagine a little boy surrounded by all of this.
Having his older brother die in battle,
and then going off to that same war
and coming home a hero.
