基本释义 [noun] a system of Christian or other religious be […]

基本释义

[noun] a system of Christian or other religious belief
[名词] 基督教或其他宗教信仰的一套体系

深入解读

Creed 一词源自拉丁语 credo （我信），在古英语时期拼作 creda ，最初用来表示“宗教信条、教义”，主要指一套明确制定并公认接受的权威信仰和崇拜体系，比如：

各种种族、肤色和宗教信仰的人
people of all races, colours and creeds

Mary is an industrious player. Never settle for mediocrity is her creed.

演讲例句

I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal.”
我梦想有一天，这个国家会站立起来，真正实现其信条的真谛：“我们认为这些真理是不言而喻的：人人生而平等。”
出自美国牧师、社会运动者、人权主义者和非裔美国人民权运动领袖马丁·路德·金（Martin Luther King Jr.）于1963年8月28日在华盛顿林肯纪念堂发表的纪念性演讲《我有一个梦想》（I have a dream）。

外刊例句

基本释义

[verb] append or add as an extra or subordinate part, especially to a document
[动词] 作为额外的或从属的部分附加或添加，尤其是加到某个文档中

深入解读

Annex 一词源自拉丁语 annecetere （绑定到），14世纪末经古法语 annexer （加入、附加）进入英语后，先是用来表示“附加、添加、附带”，常搭配介词 to 表示把某物作为额外的或从属的部分附加或添加到更早、更大或更重要的事物上，尤其是加到某个文档中，比如：

在合同上附加一项条款
annex a clause to a contract

财富未必能增添幸福。
Happiness is not always annexed to wealth.

给贵族以附带的特权
annex privileges to the peerage

从这个概念出发，到了15世纪后， annex 开始引申发展出现在的常用含义指用武力或擅自“强占、吞并”国家、地区等，也就是强行将一个额外的地理区域纳某个国家、地区等的范围，与小站（微信公众号：田间小站）推送过的 cede 相对，比如：

1938年德国吞并了奥地利。
Germany annexed Austria in 1938.

进而 annex 也被用来表示“（为自己）得到、获得”或者说“把……强行占为己有”，比如：

包揽各个奖项
annex all the prizes

她不愿意看到他被另一个女人夺去。
She did not like to see him annexed by another woman.

用作名词时， annex 则相应表示“附加物、附件、附录”以及在建筑领域表示“附属建筑物、添加的建筑物”，比如：

遗嘱的附件
an annex to the will

仓库后面增建的密室
a secret annex at the back of the warehouse

影视例句

She annexed me. She made me her business.
她强行占有了我。她把我当成她的东西。

出自2014年上映的美国悬疑惊悚片《消失的爱人》（Gone Girl）.

基本释义 [noun] a feeling of reverential respect mixed with […]

基本释义

[noun] a feeling of reverential respect mixed with fear or wonder

He speaks of her with awe.

在权势人物面前，你不由自主会毕恭毕敬。
You can’t help but stand in awe of powerful people.

这棵大树雄伟得令人惊叹。
The big tree is so imposing that it inspires awe.

用作动词时， awe 相应表示“使敬畏、使畏怯、使惊奇、使惊叹”，常作正式用语使用，比如：

他不为极不利的条件所吓倒。
He refused to be awed by the long odds.

见到这么多名人出席，似乎令她惊叹不已。
She seemed awed by the presence of so many famous people.

图书例句

Sound carries over water, and the lake people giggled at his monologues; but with undertones of awe, and even fear.
声音掠过水面，湖上的人听到他自言自语都咯咯直笑，不过笑声中却隐藏着几分敬畏，甚至恐惧。
出自印裔英国作家萨尔曼·鲁西迪（Salman Rushdie，又译萨尔曼·拉什迪）在1981年出版的长篇小说《午夜之子》（Midnight’s Children）。

外刊例句

The moment when, 50 years ago, Neil Armstrong planted his foot on the surface of the Moon inspired awe, pride and wonder around the world.
五十年前尼尔·阿姆斯特朗在月球上留下脚印的那一刻引发了全世界的敬畏、骄傲和惊叹。
——《经济学人》

Incorporating awe into your daily stroll can bring mental and physical benefits.
将敬畏融入你的日常散步之中可以带来身心上的好处。
——《纽约时报》

基本释义 [verb] make (someone) legally or morally bound to […]

基本释义

[verb] make (someone) legally or morally bound to an action or course of action

I felt obliged to indulge an invalid.

法律规定父母必须送子女入学。
Parents are obliged by law to send their children to school.

说到道德约束，为人处世中最为常见的道德约束莫过于受人恩惠而欠下的人情，即便是滴水之恩也往往令人感激涕零而涌泉相报。与之类似， oblige 到了16世纪60年代后，便从受人恩惠而产生感恩义务的概念出发，开始引申指“使感激”，常意味着通过给予好处或恩惠而使人感激（make sb indebted），现在多作礼貌用语使用，比如：

对您的帮助我不胜感激。
Much obliged for your assistance.

您若能把它读给大家听，我将不胜感激。
I would be obliged if you could read it to us.

反过来， oblige 则可以用来表示“帮……的忙、施恩惠于”，主要指按照某人的要求或愿望去做，以帮助或取悦该人，比如：

乐于效劳！
Anything to oblige!

劳您驾替我在门底下塞一个楔子让门敞开着。
Would you oblige me by pushing a wedge under the door to keep it open.

图书例句

“What is Mr. Darcy to me, pray, that I should be afraid of him? I am sure we owe him no such particular civility as to be obliged to say nothing he may not like to hear.”
“我倒请问你，达西先生与我有什么关系，我干吗要怕他？我没有理由要在他面前特别讲究礼貌，难道他不爱听的话我就不能说吗？”

出自19世纪英国小说家简·奥斯丁（Jane Austen）的代表作《傲慢与偏见》（Pride and Prejudice）。

外刊例句

Reporting laws, already in force in some American states, can oblige companies to disclose when they or their products are hacked.
已在美国部分州实施的报告法要求公司披露它们或它们的产品被黑客攻击的情况。

Your generous offer to spring for a family vacation does not oblige you to make compensatory payments to those who are unable to attend.
——《纽约时报》

horizon 基本释义 [noun] the line at which the earth’s […]

horizon

基本释义

[noun] the line at which the earth’s surface and the sky appear to meet

One day, as he sat recording the tides, a great ship appeared on the horizon.

地平线上出现太阳意味着崭新的一天即将来临，而对于原住民来说，地平线上出现船只则往往意味着灾难即将来临。从这个概念出发，便常用习语 on the horizon 引申指某个事物“已露端倪的、即将发生的”，有些类似于小站（微信公众号：田间小站）推送过的 threshold ，比如：

可能快要出事了。
There’s trouble looming on the horizon.

由于人们看不到地平线以外的事物，因而 horizon 也就自然引申指“范围、界限、眼界”，常用复数表示知识、思想、经验、阅历、兴趣、欲望等的界限范围，比如：

旅行肯定会开阔你的眼界。
Travelling certainly broadens your horizons.

好书例句

Now that a new light shone upon the horizon, this older luminary paled in the west.
现在东方地平线上升起了一轮朝阳，这弯残月就在西边天际失去了光泽。

出自美国现实主义作家西奥多·德莱赛（Theodore Dreiser）创作的长篇小说《嘉莉妹妹》（Sister Carrie）。

外刊例句

Innovations in technology, business models and management keep widening the economic horizon in previously unimaginable ways.
新技术、新的商业模式和管理方式正在以过去难以想象的方式拓宽中国经济的地平线。
——《经济学人》

A unicorn just galloped onto the horizon.

He has a broad horizon”，意思是他有广泛的知识和视野。

总之，”horizon” 是一个名词，通常用于描述我们在视野范围内看到的地平线，可以用于地理学、天文学以及引申义的描述。

chasm 基本释义 [noun] a deep fissure in the earth, rock, or […]

chasm

基本释义

[noun] a deep fissure in the earth, rock, or another surface

The eminent architect leaned over the rails and peered down into the dizzying chasm below.

不过发展到现在， chasm 这个单词更多的是作为一个正式用语，用来引申指两个人或两个团体之间的关于感情、意见、兴趣等的“巨大分歧、显著差别”，强调连续性、一致性上的急剧中断，比如：

这对夫妇未能跨越他们之间的鸿沟。他们的整个婚姻都是在做戏——他们从未相爱过。
The couple failed to bridge the chasm between them. Their whole marriage had been a charade─they had never loved each other.

发达国家和发展中国家之间仍然存在着巨大的经济差距。有些发展中国家已无力支付债务利息，正为其债务所困。
There is still a vast economic chasm between developed and developing countries. Some developing countries can no longer service their debts. They are shackled by their own debts.

值得注意的是， chasm 开头的 ch 发的是[k]音，与 chase 和 charm 中的 ch 发的[tʃ]音不同。

好书例句

Huck began to dig and scratch now. Some boards were soon uncovered and removed. They had concealed a natural chasm which led under the rock.
哈克也开始挖，不一会工夫，他们把露出的木板移走，这时出现了一个通往岩石下的天然裂口。

出自美国著名作家马克·吐温的长篇儿童文学作品《汤姆·索亚历险记》（The Adventures of Tom Sawyer）。作品主要讲述少年汤姆·索亚与哈克贝里·费恩等伙伴冒险的故事，其中汤姆是顽童的角色，在美国深受小孩的欢迎。

外刊例句

Although hopes of a deal buoy up stockmarkets, a chasm remains.
尽管达成协议的希望推高了股市，但分歧依然深刻。
——《经济学人》

It is no surprise Iraqis leave, considering the chasm between the expectations of the changes the occupation would bring and the reality 10 years later.

crusade 基本释义 [noun] each of a series of medieval milita […]

crusade

基本释义

[noun] each of a series of medieval military expeditions made by Europeans to recover the Holy Land from the Muslims in the 11th, 12th, and 13th centuries

Her past experience made her uniquely suited to lead the crusade against crime.

她致力于反对电视节目中的色情和暴力。她认为这些东西诱惑着青少年，分散了他们的学习注意力。
She crusaded against sex and violence on television. She thought they were luring youngsters away from study.

相应的， crusade 的衍生词 crusader 也就不仅作名词指历史上的“十字军战士”，现在还可以用来表示“社会改革或清除公害等运动的斗士”。
