基本释义 [verb] (of a person or small animal) move hurriedl […]

基本释义

[verb] (of a person or small animal) move hurriedly with short quick steps

scurry off to find a doctor

那个迂腐的办事员说声再见，然后扭头跑回去干活了。
The pedantic clerk said goodbye and scurried back to work.

从这个概念出发， scurry 也可以进一步用来引申指“急奔、乱窜、急转、乱转”，也就是以激动、困惑或不规则的方式四处移动，特别是在受惊吓后快而匆忙地移动，比如：

野蛮袭击发动后，居民们纷纷奔逃躲避。
The savage attack began, sending residents scurrying for cover.

高粱发酵的气味从厨房飘了出来。我们听见老鼠在厨房里乱窜。
The smell of fermented sorghum wafted up from the kitchen. We heard mice scurrying about in the kitchen.

图书例句

Hagrid vanished amongst the spiders, and with a great scurrying, a foul swarming movement, they retreated under the onslaught of spells, Hagrid buried in their midst.
海格消失在了蜘蛛群里，面对强大的咒语攻势，密密麻麻、臭烘烘的大蜘蛛纷纷后退，杂沓混乱，海格被埋在它们中间不见了踪影。
出自英国作家J·K·罗琳的奇幻小说《哈利·波特》系列的第七本《哈利·波特与死亡圣器》（Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows）。

外刊例句

On the pavement below, smartly dressed workers scurry from the crowded rush-hour subway to their offices in Lujiazui, the city’s financial district.
——《经济学人》

Sailors in helmets and goggles, mostly in their early 20s, scurry about in vests and long-sleeve shirts color-coded to indicate their jobs.

基本释义 [adjective] of or like a pedant [形容词] （似）学究的 深入解读 […]

基本释义

[adjective] of or like a pedant

What we need is someone with political savvy, not a pedant.

由此衍生而来的 pedantic 则相应表示“迂腐的、学究式的、书呆子气的”，也是指过分拘泥于书本知识、不重要的小细节或传统规则，却对重大问题兴趣不大，或者说过分纠结于无关紧要的事实、细节或形式，而忽视事物的重点，比如：

一个迂腐的办事员在一群漂亮服务员的簇拥下侍候着这位哲学家。
A pedantic clerk, surrounded by a gorgeous train of attendants, waited on the philosopher.

他们太拘泥于形式，坚持要求由贝利本人而不是他谨慎的妻子来宣布，这实在没有必要。
They were being unnecessarily pedantic by insisting that Berry himself, and not his prudent wife, should have made the announcement.

此外，这类迂腐的学究除了意味着说教（didactic）和古板外，还很容易让人联想起孔乙己那种拿着“茴”字的四种写法这种细枝末节的知识来卖弄学问的场景。同样的道理， pedant 和 pedantic 相应也被用来表示“卖弄学问者”和“卖弄学问的”。

图书例句

Mary had neither genius nor taste; and though vanity had given her application, it had given her likewise a pedantic air and conceited manner, which would have injured a higher degree of excellence than she had reached.
曼丽既没有天才，格调也不高，虽说虚荣心促使她刻苦用功，但是同样也造成了她一脸的女才子气派和自高自大的态度。有了这种气派和态度，即使她的修养再好些也无补于事，何况她不过如此而已。

出自19世纪英国小说家简·奥斯丁（Jane Austen）的代表作《傲慢与偏见》（Pride and Prejudice）。

外刊例句

Then came volumes of pedantic laws. Mr Memmert either bent them or complied as far as possible.
然后就是连篇累牍、细枝末节的法律。梅默尔特要么打擦边球，要么尽可能遵守。
——《经济学人》

Huberman is not a pedantic, encyclopedic curator, however, but an enthusiast and an explorer, willing to let his theme lead him where it may.
然而，休伯曼不是一个迂腐、百科全书式的策展人，而是一个狂热爱好者和一位探险家，愿意让他的主题领他去任何可能的地方。
——《纽约时报》

[verb] move in an energetic or noisy manner

The capital is bustling with life.

用作名词时， bustle 相应表示“忙乱嘈杂、喧闹”，比如：

The sedate garden was a haven from the noise and bustle of the city.

基本释义 [verb] allow oneself to enjoy the pleasure of [动词] […]

基本释义

[verb] allow oneself to enjoy the pleasure of

indulge an invalid

她的父亲总是对她什么奇怪的愿望都予以满足。
Her father had always indulged her every whim.

由此 indulge 也可以直接接物表示“满足”欲望、兴趣等，主要指不受限制地满足或屈从于某个欲望或兴趣，比如：

满足愿望
indulge a longing

沉湎于业余癖好
indulge one’s hobby

恣意作种种无聊的猜测
indulge idle conjectures

当欲望可以任意满足时，人往往容易沉迷其中。而 indulge 也可以搭配 indulge in sth 或 indulge oneself with sth 表示“沉湎、沉迷、沉溺（于……中）”或者说“尽情享受……”，也就是纵情享受自己想要的乐趣，尤其是被认为是对自己不利的东西，比如：

一味贪图安逸
indulge oneself in delights of leisure

我尽情享受了一次长时间的温水浴。
I indulged myself with a long tepid bath.

在口语中， indulge 可以单独拿出来表示“沉迷饮酒”，比如：

你喜欢纵酒吗？
Do you indulge?

此外， indulge in sth 这个搭配还可以用来引申指“参加或参与某项活动”，通常是不受欢迎或不被赞成的活动，比如：

我不参与无用的闲聊。
I don’t indulge in idle gossip.

基本释义 [verb] move (troops or equipment) into position fo […]

基本释义

[verb] move (troops or equipment) into position for military action

The company deployed and made a dash for the hill.

排长把他的部队散开到路的两侧。
The platoon leader deployed his men on both sides of the road.

进而 deploy 被用来引申指“部署、调度”，即调动军队或武器装备到准备进行军事行动的位置，比如：

步兵部署在山脚下。
The infantry was deployed at the foot of the mountain.

调动军队是为了将军事力量有效投入使用，从这个概念出发，随后 deploy 便开始用来泛指“施展、调动、利用、有效运用”或者说“发挥……的作用”，常作正式用语使用，主要指为了某个特意的目的而有效地利用或安排，比如：

我在工作中并不能真正发挥才能。
My job doesn’t really allow me fully to deploy my talents.

这家不讲人情的公司在重新考虑其资源的使用之道。
The impersonal company is reconsidering the way in which it deploys its resources.

外刊例句

Our job is not to flip-flop according to their models but to deploy capital over economic and technology cycles.
我们要做的不是跟着他们的模型来回折腾，而是按照经济和科技周期配置资本。
——《经济学人》

Donald Trump has been impeached for trying to kill the results of our last election, but we should have no illusions that whatever happens at his trial, the weapon he used is still freely available for others to deploy.

基本释义

[verb] remove (a need or difficulty)

This new tangible evidence obviates the need for any further enquiries.

如果能和平解决就没有必要派遣联合国维和部队。
A peaceful solution would obviate the need to send a UN military force.

图书例句

The lateness of the hour, rendering procrastinatory: the obscurity of the night, rendering invisible: the uncertainty of thoroughfares, rendering perilous: the necessity for repose, obviating movement: the proximity of an occupied bed, obviating research: the anticipation of warmth (human) tempered with coolness (linen), obviating desire and rendering desirable: the statue of Narcissus, sound without echo, desired desire.

基本释义 [verb] overcome, quieten, or bring under control ( […]

基本释义

[verb] overcome, quieten, or bring under control (a feeling or person)
[动词] 战胜、平息或控制（某个感情或人）

深入解读

Subdue 一词源自拉丁语 subducere （移开、引开、拿走；取回），14世纪末经英国法语 soduire, subdure （引入歧途，战胜，阻止）进入英语后即用来表示“制服、征服、控制、镇压”，偏正式用语，主要指使用较强的武力控制某人或某物并使之屈服，从而阻止其存在或发展，比如：

刀剑威逼顺者少，好言劝说人皆服。
Swords conquer some, but words subdue all men.

政府高级官员承认他们还没能镇压这场暴乱。
Senior government officials admit they have not been able to subdue the mutiny.

从这个概念出发， subdue 常用来引申指通过运用意志来“压制、抑制、克制”恐惧、愤怒、高兴等感情，使之不那么强烈，比如：

我们强忍着笑。
We subdued a desire to laugh.

那个胆小的女孩强迫自己克制并战胜恐惧心理。
The timid girl forced herself to subdue and overcome her fears.

进而 subdue 也被用来表示“减轻、减弱、减缓、缓和”某个事物的强度或程度，比如：

退热
subdue a fever

值得注意的是， subdue 同小站（微信公众号：田间小站）推送过的 subside 一样，其开头的 sub 读作[səb]，而不要将其误读成[sʌb]，参见下方影视用例。

影视例句

He subdued a highly dangerous patient quite handily.
他轻而易举地制伏了一位极度危险的病人。

出自2010年上映的美国心理惊悚电影《禁闭岛》（Shutter Island）。
