rapport 基本释义 [noun] a close and harmonious relationship […]

rapport

[noun] a close and harmonious relationship in which the people or groups concerned understand each other’s feelings or ideas and communicate well

A dearth of staple foods caused the prices to go up. But if you have a good rapport with a dealer, they will always let you have first refusal on anything interesting.

She used to call at the houses of newcomers to the district, soliciting for custom. She understood the importance of establishing a close rapport with clients.

而看起来像是 rapport 的衍生词的 rapporteur （特别调查员）实则也是源自法语 rapporter （带回、涉及），该词曾出现在《2019年美国侵犯人权报告》（The Record of Human Rights Violations in the United States in 2019）中用来表示联合国特别报告员（UN Special Rapporteur）。

– He had very little rapport with his staff and his dispatches…
– Rapport. Very little rapport.

Mrs. Obama’s rapport with Laura Bush is less playful, but Mrs. Obama’s aides say it is no less genuine.
This week his much hyped new movie, which is an interesting hybrid of documentary and entertainment, opens in Shanghai.

At that time, we were both so hyped up about buying the house, we could not wait to get in there. In the end, we bought the house on a whim.

Salinger: “What really knocks me out is a book that, when you’re all done reading it, you wish the author that wrote it was a terrific friend of yours and you could call him up on the phone whenever you felt like it. That doesn’t happen much, though. I wouldn’t mind calling this David Copperfield up. I wish he was my brother. I laughed all the way through it. It’s really funny. It’s sort of funny. It’s funny, but not funny. It’s partly funny. It’s funny, but it’s also very serious and all. It’s not the kind of a book you could put down, anyway. I read it right straight through. Do you know what I mean? It’s one of those books that if you started reading it, you wouldn’t stop till you’d finished it, if you were hungry or sleepy or whatever. You don’t feel like sleeping for a week afterwards. It’s that kind of a book. You don’t feel like doing anything afterwards. You don’t feel like having any fun. You don’t feel like going to a show.

[verb] restore friendly relations between

He has recently been reconciled with his wife. Yesterday he lavished his wife with kisses without demur.

She must reconcile herself to the fact that she must do some rote learning if she wants to pass her exams.

The strident feminist found that it was hard to reconcile her career ambitions with the needs of her children.

leverage 基本释义 [noun] the exertion of force by means of […]

leverage

[noun] the exertion of force by means of a lever or an object used in the manner of a lever

Her function as a Mayor affords her the leverage to get things done through attending committee meetings. But at the same time, it is hard to reconcile her political ambitions with the needs of her children.

With leverage, the moribund company made a hefty profit.

You can supersede your feeble boss as president by leveraging the debacle of the war.

You should have called me when you had some actual leverage.

Canada and Mexico look set to be temporarily excluded—but only because Mr Trump wants leverage in his renegotiation of the North American Free-Trade Agreement, which has nothing to do with national security.

How much leverage do the United States and its allies have over the Taliban?

endorse

[verb] declare one’s public approval or support of

The bill needs to be endorsed.

The purport of his letter was that he fully endorsed everything the Chairperson had said.

It startled them to see that the world champion was eliminated in the first round of the competition because they just paid $5 million to him to endorse their new products.

Soon after driving off at a furious pace, she was fined and her driving licence was endorsed.

It’s a cashier’s check. Endorse it over to me.

出自2002年上映的美国传记犯罪电影《猫鼠游戏》（Catch Me If You Can）。

Blockchains can also implement business rules, such as transactions that take place only if two or more parties endorse them, or if another transaction has been completed first.

recoup 基本释义 [verb] regain (something lost or expended) […]

recoup

[verb] regain (something lost or expended)

You’re eligible to recoup rising costs of materials and labour.

I saw him very chafe and fret at every pore, so I offered to recoup him for his share of the expenses.

Many moribund insurance companies are trying to recoup their losses by increasing premiums.

It’s a marvel to me that he recouped his investment within a year.

Five percent of the net profits, after I recoup.

infringe 基本释义 [verb] actively break the terms of (a law […]

infringe

[verb] actively break the terms of (a law, agreement, etc.)

He used low cunning to get what he wanted. But the jury ruled that he had infringed no rules.

The film exploited her image and infringed her copyright.

She reiterated that she refused to answer questions that infringed on her private affairs.

It gravely infringes on China’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, severely violates the one-China principle and the three China-U.S. joint communiques, seriously tramples on international law and the basic norms governing international relations, breaks the serious political commitment the United States has made to China, and sends a seriously wrong signal to forces seeking “Taiwan independence.”

Either approach, however, would infringe the Caesar Act, an American law passed in 2019 which prohibits business with the regime.

The Indiana Democrat, who was worried that the ban might infringe on the rights of law-abiding gun owners, had already voted against the bill.

ledger 基本释义 [noun] a book or other collection of financ […]

ledger

[noun] a book or other collection of financial accounts of a particular type

He even doctored the ledgers in his bank to help the underdog.

When you come to one of the many moments in life where you must give an account of yourself, provide a ledger of what you have been, and done, and meant to the world, do not, I pray, discount that you filled a dying man’s days with a sated joy, a joy unknown to me in all my prior years, a joy that does not hunger for more and more but rests, satisfied. In this time, right now, that is an enormous thing.

vocation 基本释义 [noun] a strong feeling of suitability fo […]

vocation

[noun] a strong feeling of suitability for a particular career or occupation

Though seeing blood makes her feel a bit peculiar inside, she is a doctor with a strong sense of vocation.

She has a vocation for teaching. She has taken to teaching like a duck to water and knows how to help students break their learning plateaus.

Developing super hybrid rice is not just a job─it’s a vocation.

You missed your vocation─you should have been an actor. You have an actor’s typically malleable features.

Joseph remained to hector over tenants and labourers; and because it was his vocation to be where he had plenty of wickedness to reprove.
